Love, the Greatest Commandment, Part 1Give God First Place
The first of the Ten Commandments says: “You shall have no other gods before me”
(Exodus 20:3 ESV).
When we love God with all of our heart, soul, and mind, and our
neighbor as ourselves …1
We want to give God and His ways first place in our lives. We
don’t want to put our selfish desires or someone’s wrong opinions of how to live above
God’s way. We try to live the way we know Jesus wants us to live, doing things that we know will make Him and others happy.
1 Matthew 22:37–39 ESV
Mom, Becca wants me to tell Cindy the party is
Sunday at 5 o’clock instead of at 3. She thinks it will be funny to trick her into
missing the party.
I see, Hazel. I have a question
for you.
How did things turn out in the Bible story where Jacob lied to his father about who he was, causing his father to
think he was Esau?
Esau was very hurt and angry, so Jacob had
to flee. Then everyone was unhappy.

Cindy, are you coming to my party Sunday
afternoon? It starts at 3 o’clock.
“In all your ways
acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths”
(Proverbs 3:6 ESV).
Thank you, Mom! I want to do things God’s way, and not
hurt Cindy.
Oh, yes! I’ll be there!
Thank You, Jesus, for helping me do things Your way and making Cindy
happy!
