Application
Ultracapacitor is consisted of two electrodes immersed in an electrolyte and separator prevents the charge from moving between twoelectrodes having different polarity.
LS Cable provides optimum design of package to have the best performance and reliability.
Structure
Ultracapacitor stores energy relied on electrostatic charges on opposite electrode surface of the electric double layer, which is formedbetween each of the electrodes and the electrolyte. Randomly distributed ions in electrolyte move toward the electrode surface of oppositepolarity under electric field when charged. It is purely physical phenomena rather than through a chemical reaction and highly reversibleprocess, which result in high power, high cycle life, long shelf life, and maintenance-free product.
Operating Principle
Ultracapacitor is unique energy storage device to offerhigh power and high energy simultaneously comparedwith conventional electrolytic capacitor and battery. The high content of energy stored by Ultracapacitor incomparison to conventional electrolytic capacitor iscame from activated carbon electrode material havingthe extremely high surface area and the short distanceof charge separation created by the opposite charges inthe interface between electrode and electrolyte.
High power, long shelf and cycle life performance ofUltracapacitor originate in the energy storagemechanism differing from battery. In battery, energy isstored and released via chemical reaction insideelectrode material that cause degradation of overallsystem. On the other side, Ultracapacitor usesphysically charge separation phenomena betweencharge on electrode and ions in electrolyte at theinterface. Since charge and discharge process arepurely physical and highly reversible, Ultracapacitor canrelease energy much faster (with more power) than abattery that relies on slow chemical reactions and canbe cycled hundreds of thousands of times without deepeffect on performance.
High Energy & High Power
Ultracapacitor is an energy storage device that has different charge & discharge characteristics compared with rechargeable battery. Battery hasvoltage plateau region but Ultracapacitor shows only linear relationship with voltage during charge and discharge. The linear relationship withvoltage can change to constant voltage by simply connecting DC-DC converter. The amount of energy stored in Ultracapacitor can be easilycalculated by measuring voltage.
Charge & Discharge
Energy Equation for Ultracapacitor
Different unit between Ultracapacitor(Farad) and battery(Ampere hour) make user to confuse when adopting Ultracapacitor in theirsystem. The amount of energy stored in Ultracapacitor can be easily calculated by using following equation.
Energy (Joule) = 1/2 x Capacitance (Farad) x Voltage2 (Volt)
It can be converted from Farad for Ultracapacitor to Watt hour unit which is normally used for conventional rechargeable battery.
Energy (Watt hour) = Energy (Joule) / 3600 (sec)
LS Cable recommends to operate Ultracapacitor from maximum voltage to half voltage and release 3/4 of total energy.
LS Ultracapacitor Module provides leading solution for high voltage and current required application by connecting 3000F Ultracapacitor unitcell in series. Higher voltage and capacitance module can be built simply by connecting the modules.
Low internal resistance and high working voltage features of module maximize its available energy while keeping maintenance free, highreliability and wide operating temperature features of LS Ultracapacitor unit cell.
