Introduction to Globalisation

Lesson Aims:

• To know what Globalisation is;

• To begin to explore the key concepts, processes and terminology relating to globalisation.

• Look at this image carefully.• What do you think the

definition of globalisation is.

• Write your idea on a post-it and come and stick it to the board.

• What is interesting about this image ?

• What examples of globalisation can you see ?

• You have 10 minutes to go round the class and find someone who has….

• Done everything on the sheet- each can be a different person

• All these are examples of globalisation

• In your smaller groups come up with a definition for globalisation

Task One- find someone who…

Key term!!!

• Globalisation is the process by which people, their cultures, money, goods and information can be transferred between countries with increasingly few barriers.

• Globalisation is nothing new in the sense that countries and continents have always been connected in economic, cultural and political ways through trade, colonialism and cooperation.

Pre 1940s connections• Globalisation only came into common

usage in the 1990s, but places have been linked back into history through:-

e.g. united nations, NATO- where people/ govts from different countries come together to protect or help places

e.g. British empire- tea to UK from India

Mainly European nations colonizing Africa, parts of Asia and the Americas)

Post 1940s - Two aspects

Globalisation Connections are lengthening

new links between places

that are greaterdistances apart

Connections are deeper

• More people’s lives connect with far away places – e.g. purchasing commodities / cheaper travel

• Not just rich people who ‘live globally’

Deep

shallowNear Far

What has made this possible?

• The world is effectively shrinking!

• Information, goods and services can now be transferred much more quickly.

• The cost of communications has fallen

• Tech has increased and the growth of global networks like face book make communications easy.

Task • Use the sheet entitled ‘information’ to

make a mind map about globalisation

Home of McDonalds HQ world’s largest food TNC, 28,000+ outlets in 121 countries

Exam Practice.

• What do you understand from the term ‘shrinking world’? (4)

Task- Complete the ‘how global am I’ worksheet

Homework Task -How global am I?• Make a display entitled-• My global life!!!

Consider everything

What do you watch on TV? Set in? favourite films- set?

Who do you talk to on line? Where are they? Where is your computer made? Bought ?

What make is your mobile? Company HQ in?

What food do you like most? Where from? Bought in?

Places you visited?

Where are your clothes, shoes made?

Do you have a games console? PS3, Xbox etc made in?

Your display must include an A3 world map with all the countries you are linked to highlighted and labelled
