ISTInstituto Superior Técnico

• 11500 students and 870 faculty members• 30 R&D institutes• 100 M€ annual budget (54% own resources)• Integrates several international networks (e.g.

CLUSTER, EIT-KIC InnoEnergy) and various joint PhD programmes (e.g. MIT, CMU, UT Austin, EPFL)

Founded in 1911, it is the largest and most reputed school of Engineering, Science, Technology and Architecture in Portugal, being ranked in the top 15 of the best Engineering schools in Europe.

IPFNInstituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear

• Associate Laboratory of FCT• Rated Exceptional (Dec. 2014)• Research unit managing the

Eurofusion contract in Portugal

IPFN has 81 PhD researchers working on cutting-edge fields of Plasma Science and Engineering, some of whom are in charge of all teaching activities nationwide in this field.

APPLAuSE

Doctoral program on Plasma Science and Engineering, now on its 3rd edition, funded by FCT (PD -F)

APPLAuSE

APPLAuSE is - hosted by IPFN, a research unit of - Técnico (IST), the engineering school

providing the academic framework from the- post-graduate training of its Physics Department.- Técnico belongs to the University of Lisbon,

which awards the PhD degree

Governing Board

Luís L. Alves (faculty mbr), Programme Director (llalves@tecnico.ulisboa.pt)

Carlos Silva (ipfn researcher), Controlled Nuclear Fusion

Vasco Guerra (faculty mbr), Low-temperature Plasma S&E

Gonçalo Figueira (faculty mbr), High-Energy-Density Physics

Luís O. Silva (faculty mbr), Space and Astrophysical Plasmas

Bruno Gonçalves (ipfn researcher), President of IPFN

How APPLAuSE works

Each doctoral program is 4-years long

Successful applicants (max 10/edition for 4 editions) are awarded a PhD fellowship, financed by FCT

The research program is carried at IPFN and at foreign institutions (3rd year secondment abroad)

After completion the student is awarded a PhD degree in Physics / Eng. Physics (by University of Lisbon)

What makes APPLAuSE different

You are evaluated only for your CV, skills and motivation: it only depends on you

You are free to choose the thesis topic after you learn the basics

You are not alone – you belong to a cohort and are part of an integrated programme

4+1 Curricular Units (UCs) of the Doctoral Program in Physics / Physics Engineering with the Physics Department of IST

• Fundamentals of Plasma Physics, Nuclear Fusion and Lasers

• Diagnostic Methods for Plasmas• Advanced Topics in Plasma Physics,

Nuclear Fusion and Lasers • Advanced Computation in Physics and Engineering

& Seminar of Physics

Year 1intensive training modules

General information• 5 weeks of intense training

(3 hrs lectures – morning; homework assignments – afternoon)

• Modular organization(each module under the responsibility of a teacher)

• 1 week for final evaluation (written exam or oral exam / presentation)

Year 1intensive training modules

ObjectivesProvide intensive training on ethics and communication / presentation skills

The module covers• the rules of effective communication• the rules of article writing• the ethics on "On being a scientist", minorities and biases, mentors and supervisors• thinking outside the box: intellectual property; going entrepreneurial• teamwork & lessons learned

Assessment is based on• written essay/review article of up to 6 pages, on a subject chosen among

all advanced topics presented during the training modules, using LaTeX or MS Word template from a journal

[in 2015: APPLAuSE Review Letters]• 15 min presentation on the previous subject

Year 1transverse -skills module

Year 1laboratory rotations

Lab1 Lab2

Lab3

4 weeks each

20-30 proposals

The Thesis Projects (TPs) , to be prepared in coordination with the supervisor, includes:• title and abstract• objectives• state of the art & motivation• research plan & methods, including

- milestones to achieve - prospective indication on the number of conferences / workshops to attend each year- tentative dates for the secondment year abroad (ideally during the 2nd year of the PhD thesis).

Year 1preparation of thesis projects
