Public exam schedule announced
The State Board ex-aminations for Class XII students will begin on March 1, 2019 and for Class X on March 14 next year. From this academic year, students need not write two papers each for English and language as a result of which, the results too will be announced well in advance. Class XII stu-dents will be writing a paper for 100 marks for two-and-a-half hours in-stead of a three-hour ex-
amination.The board examination
for Class XI students, who have a revamped syllabus for this academic year, will begin on March 6 and end on March 22. The sched-
ule for announcement of results, too, have been de-clared. Class XII students are expected to get their results on April 19, ex-actly a month after they finish their exams.

Organic skincare products on demand
The rise in organic brands is driven by consumers who are increasingly becoming aware of what goes into the making of the products they are using, and what are the long-terms effects on their overall well-being.
Organic and vegan prod-ucts are the new must-haves that beauty conscious peo-ple and skincare lovers are rooting for. While some brands have been able to spot and bank on the gaping gap in the variety available, consumers are becoming more receptive to know the importance of using chemi-cal-free products with right ingredients on their body.
This increasing con-sciousness has led to a grow-
ing demand for more natu-ral and sustainable substi-tutes in many industries.
This trend is offering a platform to Indian home-grown brands that are creat-ing a niche for themselves and introducing exclusive range of organic-only per-sonal care brands.
These rising brands have got their hooks into the gap that exists in terms of prod-uct variety and ingredients, which is giving a “tough competition to international and national players”.
The organic skincare market in India is likely to grow two-fold in the next five years and cross the Rs 1,000 crore mark by 2020.
All said and done, the shelf life of these products is a major factor that can influence an individual’s vanity or skincare collec-tion. This is one reason why
most people prefer better known brands for their lasting properties, ir-respective of chemical content. The organic products have a different kind of preservative which is plant-derived. Their shelf life is less than chemical-based cosmetics, but is long enough to allow their use on a comfortable period. But there are some precautions that can help to expand the life of the organic products like storing them in cool and away from humidity.
D GuKESH, RAKISHTHA, RAVI, MEnDOnCA LEOn LuKE and SAVITHASHRI of Velammal Vidyalaya secured gold medals
for the second time in a row, making India and Velammal proud at the
World School Chess Championship held in
Russia recently.

Chennai Metro Railto launch e-bikes
Chennai Metro Rail will set up electric vehicle (EV) charging facility at four metro stations in partner-ship with Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. The electric bike charging sta-tions will be set up at Ti-r u m a n -galam, St
Thomas Mount, Alandur and Koyambedu Metro Stations.
Chennai Metro is also planning to launch e-bikes and is in talks with a Ben-galuru-based company, Metro Rail sources said. It is learnt that the bikes
scheme would be more or less akin to that introduced by Ben-galuru Metro.
M e a n w h i l e ,
Chennai Metro’s ridership has increased after the opening of Nehru Park to Chennai Central Stretch and Little Mount to AG-DMS stretch. The Metro is currently running 25 trains during office hours from 8 am to 10.30 am and from 5 pm to 8.30 pm. During non-peak hours, it operates 20 trains and has two trains as standby.

KAFOA’s unique move to reduce plastic pollution
The KGeYes Apoorva Flat Owners Association (KAFOA) with an Inten-tion to create an aware-ness to reduce plastic pollution will organise vertical gardening on June 17. A library is also to be opened in the cam-pus. All association mem-bers interested in donat-ing books can do so to the association. There will also be a painting compe-tition for kids. Children are requested to bring painting material.
Crematorium closed for maintenance
The civic body run crematorium for Hindus at Arumbakkam (Zone 8) will be shut for mainte-nance from Saturday. The facility will be shut for two weeks for the pur-pose, said a statement from the Chennai Corpo-ration. According to the statement the fire cham-ber in the crematorium has developed a fault, forcing the Corporation to close it for taking up maintenance work. The work would be taken up between June 16 and June 30. During this pe-riod, the public may use the Velankadu cremato-rium on New Avadi Road at Anna Nagar or the Hindu crematorium at Nungambakkam, the statement said.
Face recognition software at Rly stations
In a bid to trace miss-ing children, the govern-ment Railway Police have proposed to install face recognition software in CCTV cameras at differ-ent stations across the state.
This will help in trac-ing children who run away after failure in ex-ams. Pictures of the chil-dren can be uploaded in the face recognition soft-ware so that CCTV cam-eras at the Railway sta-tions can identify them.
Supplementary hall ticket on June 19
Candidates who have registered for the special supple-mentary HSE can download hall tickets on www.dge.tn.gov.in on June 19, according to a statement by the Directorate of Government Examinations on Thursday.
Students who did not qualify in practical module of a subject, will have to appear for both written and practical exam again, the statement said.

People walking on the footpath on the Mogappair-
Thirumangalam Road, especially at the junction of Park Road, are being put to great hardship dur-ing morning and evening hours as reckless two-wheeler riders are driving right on the footpath. The problem is acute at the junction where the road turns onto Park Road.
Two-wheeler riders instead of using the road to take a left turn are in a hurry and end up riding on the footpath that is on an elevated level com-pared to the road level. Consequently, people who traverse on foot are forced to walk on the road risking their lives and limbs in the literal sense.
“This is rather a rou-tine daily affair here. Motorists wanting to
take the left turn and proceed on Park Road do not want to wait for the traffic signal to turn green and ride on the road. Instead, they drive their scooters and motor-cycles on the elevated footpath and take the left turn to avoid the waiting time during the red sig-nal. It is sad that road rules are being violated with such impunity at this location,” said An-thony Das, a pedestrian and resident
of the nearby Padik-uppam Road.
Pedestr ians com-plained that very rare personnel of the Chennai City Traffic Police are posted at the junction. “Even if the traffic ser-gent is posted on duty, he only regulates the traffic and remains blind to the violation by two-wheeler riders who use the foot-path to travel,” alleged Rameshan, another pe-destrian.
“One day I was walk-ing on this footpath with my six-year-old daughter holding her hand and carrying a shopping bag on the other hand. Sud-denly I was taken aback to see that a man on a scooter brushing against me in his hurry to take the left turn towards Park Road. I yelled at him but he screamed back asking me to not to walk with my eyes closed. I couldn’t spot any traffic police personnel to complain and was also not able to note down the registra-tion number of the vio-lating scooter,” com-plained Mangalam, a housewife and resident of Welcome Colony.
Walkers felt that driv-ing on the footpath must be made an offence and the traffic police must frequently launch crack-downs against such er-rant bikers to ensure that the pedestrians get their due space to walk.

CAn SLEEPInG MORE affect one’s health
If you thought that only less hours of sleep would affect your health, then you are wrong. Sleeping more than 10 hours per day is also associated with metabolic syn-drome, raising the risk for heart diseases, according to a new study.
Those who slept for over 10 hours
daily were at risk of elevated waist circumference, high triglyceride levels, low levels of “good” choles-terol, hypertension as well as high fasting blood sugar referred to as metabolic syndrome and associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.
While sleeping more raised tri-glycerides levels in both men and women, in women it led to higher waist circumference, blood sugar as well as lower levels of “good” cho-lesterol. Conversely, getting less than six hours of sleep was associated
with higher risk of metabolic syn-drome in men and higher waist cir-cumference among both men and women, researchers said. This is the largest study examining a dose-re-sponse association between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome.
The study, published in the jour-nal BMC Public Health, included data from 1,33,608 participants aged between 40-69 years. The results showed that the prevalence of meta-bolic syndrome was just over 29 percent in men and 24.5 per cent in women.
SMOKInG, DIAbETES LInKED TO DEMEnTIA RISK
While smoking and diabetes have long been known to increase the risk of cancer and heart disease, researchers have warned that it can clog brain region crucial to memory, increasing the risk for dementia.
The findings showed that smoking and diabetes may have link with in-creased risk of calcification - calcium salt deposits - in hippocampus, a brain struc-ture important for both short and long-term memory storage. Decline in functions of hippocampus have been associated with Alzheim-er’s disease, the most common type of demen-tia.
It is well known that smoking and diabetes are risk factors for cardiovas-cular disease.
In the study, published in the journal Radiology, the team studied the as-sociation between vascu-lar risk factors like high blood pressure, diabetes and smoking, and hip-pocampal calcifications on 1,991 patients with an average age of 78 years.
They also assessed the effects of calcifi-cations on cognitive function.
The patients had a standard diagnos-tic work-up including cognitive tests and brain CT scans.
While the study was not designed to conclusively determine if smoking and diabetes increase the risk of hippocam-pal calcifications, the results suggest a link.

The school education department has introduced new set of rules on govern-ment schools by introduc-ing new stipulations, which are mandatory for the students to follow.
The new rules stipulate that students must arrive at the school by 9.15 am. They must not wear low-hip pants, and that the school will allow only loose-fitting half shirts. The shirts must be long enough to ensure that it does not come out when
tucked in. Also, belts with black buckles will only be permitted in the school.
Similarly, nails should have been trimmed prop-erly. No hair style other than ‘police cut’ will be allowed and boys must ensure that their mous-taches do not extend up to the upper lip. Stringent action will be taken against those sporting ‘twirling moustaches’, according to the new set of rules.
The new rules also list restrictions on the acces-
sories that will be allowed to wear. Rubber bands on wrists, studs, chains or ear rings are strictly banned in the school. Students can go on leave only with the permission of the teachers and the signature of their parents. Motorcycles, mo-biles and smart phones are proscribed in the school and if seized, they will not be returned to students, the rules said and added that students must come in school uniform even on their birthdays.
This is done with the aim of the government to ensure discipline and thereby improve academic performance.

A new foot overbridge will be constructed on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai (100 Feet Road) at Thiru-mangalam near the Kend-riya Vidyalaya Anna Nagar school which is lo-cated inside the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) Quarters. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami made an announcement about the project in the ongoing session of the Legislative Assembly. The proposal has brought cheer to the local residents.
In fact, this will be sec-ond foot overbridge in the Anna Nagar locality. Some years ago the State Gov-ernment had constructed a foot overbridge in Anna Nagar West near the SBOA School junction.
Local residents said that they had been seeking a foot overbridge in the lo-cality as hundreds of stu-dents of the central school are finding it difficult to cross the road at this loca-tion. "Ever since the Thi-rumangalam flyover was constructed, it has become
very difficult for pedestri-ans to cross the road to reach the CPWD Quarters inside which the school that is affiliated to the Central Board for Second-ary Education (CBSE) is located. A foot overbridge at this location has been our demand for quite some time now and we are happy that the State Gov-ernment has agreed to our demand and announced its decision to construct a foot overbridge," said Ma-nivannan, a Central Gov-ernment employee and resident of the CPWD Quarters.
Parents of children studying in the school also welcomed the proposal. "My daughter, who is in elementary class, has often complained about not be-ing able to cross the road to reach her school on a daily basis. She takes a bus from Anna Nagar West Depot and gets down at the Thirumangalam bus stop right on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai. Sometimes she has to wait for upto 10 minutes to be able to cross the road safely and due to this reaches her class late.

Once a foot overbridge comes up here, it will be easy for her to reach the other end of the road and go to her school," said Ja-laja, a resident of Anna Nagar.
However, a section of residents was sceptical about the initiative. "In many places in the city, people are not using foot overbridges to cross the road as the stairs are quite steep. Therefore, it remains to be seen if the proposed foot overbridge in Anna Nagar will serve its pur-pose," said Girish, who resides in the CPWD Quarters.
