Turning is the process of machining external cylindrical and conical surfaces. It is usually performed on a lathe. The workpiece is rotated into a longitudinally fed, single-point cutting tool.

Boring is a variation of turning. It is internal turning.

MACHINE SHOP: LAB 2- Single Point Tools

Most cutting tools have two cutting edges; a side-cutting edge and end-cutting edge.

In most case the cutting tool is clamped in a tool holder

-Facing is the producing of a flat surface as the result of the tool being fed across the end of the rotating workpiece. The tool is wider than the width of the cut and is fed at 90º to the axis of rotation.- taper turning is when the tool is fed at an angle to the axis of rotation.-Parting or cutoff is when the tool is fed all the way to the axis of the workpiece, it will be cut into two. Similar tool is used for necking or partial cutoff.
