What is convergent evolution?• When two species or populations evolve to become

more similar to each other. Hint: Evolution of analogous structures is always an example of convergent evolution.

What is divergent evolution?• When two species or populations evolve to become

more different from each other Hint: The evolution of homologous structures is always an example of divergent evolution.

What is adaptive radiation?• A special type of divergent evolution• One common ancestor species evolves into many

new species.Example: Galapagos finches; one common ancestor evolved into many different new species.

What is extinction?• When every member of a species dies out

What is a mass extinction?• When many species suddenly go extinct• There have been 5 mass

extinctions in the history of the Earth
