Storms– rain,snow,wind,andice– alreadyposechallengestoresidentsandmunicipalities.Stormeventsareprojectedtoincreaseinfrequencyandintensityinthefuture,sotheneedtopreparewillbecomeevenmoreimportant.

Inaddition,extremeheatdaysareexpectedtobecomemorefrequentduringthesummer,requiringadifferenttypeofemergencypreparedness.Communitiesneedtobeabletotakecareofallresidents,especiallythosemostvulnerabletotheseimpacts.

EXTREMEPRECIPITATION&FLOODINGHeavyprecipitationisexpectedtoincreaseinfrequencyandintensity,causingmoreproblemswithfloodingandputtingpeopleandinfrastructureatrisk.

DROUGHT&WATERSUPPLY

Astemperaturesrise,sodoesthelikelihoodofdrought,whichwillinfluencedrinkingwatersupplies,water-basedrecreation,agriculture,andwildlife.

• 22-48 fewerdaysperyearbelow32°F(fromthehistoricalaverageof154)1

• 21-57 moredaysperyearabove90°F(fromtothehistoricalaverageof10)1

Madbury isnotespeciallyvulnerabletofloodingfromsea-levelriseandcoastalstormsurge,buttheexpectedincreaseinheavyprecipitationeventswillcauselocalissues.EventhoughtheTownofMadbury itselfmaynotbeasvulnerabletocertainimpactsassomeofitsneighbors,thevulnerabilitiesofthoseneighboringcommunitiesmayaffectMadbury’s capacityandoptionsforemergencyresponseandevacuation.

WatersupplyisanotherconcernasMadbury anditsneighboringcommunitiesseeincreasingdemandforwateraspopulationsgrow,inconjunctionwithhotter,dryersummers,lessprecipitationduringthewinter,andlessinfiltrationduetotheintensityofrainfallandexpansionofimpervioussurfaces.

Madbury’s naturalresourceswillbeimpactedbysomeofthesesameissues.Theseresources,suchasforestsandwetlands,canprovideprotectionforMadbury’s residentsandinfrastructure(inadditiontotheirbenefitsforwildlife).Forexample,forestsprovidelocallycoolertemperatures,andwetlandsandtheirsurroundingbuffershelpmitigatefloodingandprotectwaterresourcesinthecaseofwetlands.Butasclimatechangeaddsstresstoecosystems,theymaynotbeabletoprovidethosebenefitsaseffectivelyinthefuture.
