In English we make comparisons of adjectives and adverbs by saying the following: AdjectivesRalf is smart.Philip is smarter.Hans is the smartest.

Comparisons with Adjectives

Making comparisons with adjectives in German requires using special endings on each adjective, so we will learn those later.

Comparison of Adverbs

The adverb modifies the verb. • Positive: Die Straβenbahn fährt schnell.• Comparative: Das Auto fährt schneller.• Superlative: Der Zug fährt am schnellsten.

Weird Rules to Remember

When an adjective or adverb ends in d, t, s, β, sch, st, x or z, the ending in the superlative has an additional e.
