We are an extremely efficient organization. Our administration and fund development expenses account for only 15.3% of our revenue. When the full value of our entire operations, including food raising and sharing, is accounted for, our administrative costs are 1%.

Who are we?Food Banks Canada is the only national charitable organization dedicated to addressing the issue of hunger in Canada. We do this by working to alleviate hunger today and prevent hunger tomorrow, in order to help the 882,188 Canadians who turn to food banks each month, 38% of whom are children.
Food Banks Canada works in support of our membership: provincial Members and Affiliate Member food banks. Together, we are addressing hunger in Canada by serving 85% of people accessing essential food programs nationwide.

This information provides the basis for our quantitative and qualitative analysis pointing to the enormity and complexity of the issue, and informs our policy work. ADVoCAte FoR CHAnGeWe work to inform and change policy and create long-term solutions, with the ultimate goal of not only preventing hunger in the future but also improving the lives of low-income Canadians in the areas of housing, employment, and education.

Through nationally coordinated food raising opportunities, we provide significant quantities of food and consumer
products to our network.
We support our membership by sharing resources and providing support programs.
We are making an impact by seeking long-term solutions.
We raised
5,959,240 kg of food worth $32,775,818*
HELPING RURAL AREASWe provided $50,000 to 57 food banks outside of urban centres, to help with transportation and other costs, through the Rural Support program.
REACHING COMMUNITIESWe provided $60,000 in grants to10 food banks to help them serve their communities last year through the Community Kitchens program.
EDUCATING THE PUBLICOur Feeding Families program provided two new educational resources to help families and children learn how to eat nutritiously on a budget, and grants of $30,000 to food banks for family programs.
SHARING SAFE FOOD We trained more than 300 individuals this year alone, and more than 750 throughout the term of our Safe Food Handling program.
IMPROVING INFRASTRUCTUREWe provided grants of $100,000 to help food banks improve infrastructure in order to effectively receive and distribute food and maintain food safety standards through our Capacity Building Fund.

Food Banks Canada is making the connections that can help Canadians who are hungry by addressing the short-term need for food and resources, while working towards long-term solutions to hunger. Our activities and programs are aimed at supporting our membership to build a strong national network that helps improve the situation of Canadians living with household food insecurity. We also engage in research, awareness building, advocacy, and government relations work aimed at providing longer-term solutions.

ADVOCACY & AWARENESS RAISING
Hunger Awareness Week – Our annual awareness-building event took place May 7–11, 2012, the first week-long Hunger Awareness event. The 2012 campaign invited Canadians to give up meals for a day, lunch for a week, or a staple food item, in order to walk in the shoes of people who are hungry and better understand the issue. 120 food banks participated and more than 150 parliamentarians fasted in support.
Say No to Hunger – Launched in 2012 to educate and engage Canadians in finding solutions to hunger, the campaign has gathered momentum in 2013 with the addition of sponsors Shaw and PepsiCo,
who have provided TV media support. As of April 2013, more than 20,000 Canadians took the pledge to Say No to Hunger.
Government Relations – We continued to build our presence in Ottawa in 2012 with strong lobbying efforts connected to Hunger Awareness Week and the launch of HungerCount 2012. Throughout the year, we worked to inform parliamentarians about the problem of hunger, and we proposed strategic recommendations to reduce the need for food banks. In one-on-one meetings, small groups, and official parliamentary committees, we grew our reputation as the expert on hunger in Canada.
RESEARCHOur research into food bank use in Canada, published in our annual HungerCount report, continues to be the only comprehensive survey and analysis
of emergency food programs in communities across the country. It has become an essential research tool among media, government, researchers, and advocates for low-income Canadians.

National Food Sharing System By providing an infrastructure that facilitates the acquisition and sharing of food across the country, Food Banks Canada’s National Food Sharing System (NFSS) has become a cornerstone of our member support activities. Through it, we acquire large-scale industry donations of food and consumer products, and organize national food drives. Last year we also piloted a Retail Food program. The NFSS is highly efficient: for every $1 donated, we are able to acquire $20 of food and consumer products, which are then shared with our membership across the country.
