Hello Makybe Rise Families
I just love this time of year when the days are
sunny and the skies are clear! Spring is always
such a good time to take stock of everything
we have worked hard for and accomplished
throughout the year. Taking a few moments
to reflect with gratitude re-energises and re-
focuses me for the weeks ahead until
Christmas.
And we have so much to feel grateful for!
Our deepest thanks goes to our amazing and
wonderful P&C team for all their planning and
coordination of our Makybe Quiz Night! Our
thanks also goes to the individuals and
businesses who supported the night including
Matt Whitfield, and Reece Whitby. This was
such a fun community event!
On the theme of Community Spirit, healthy
competitive spirits were running strong last
Friday as the Awesome Mix in Year Six
students challenged Makybe staff to a
lunchtime Floorball showdown out on the
basketball courts! The courts were flooded
with cheering students as the staff narrowly
won the day! The challenge is back on this
Friday as students and staff hustle it out on
the netball courts! Go staff!! Our thanks goes
to Mr Fernandez for his inspired coordination
of Makybe’s inaugural Pelican Cup.
(Wondering where the Pelican comes from?
The pelican is an image used by our school’s
Tribes approach to represent reflection. The
pelican soars above the action and takes a
bird’s eye view perspective to help us think
about the bigger picture!)
In yet another show of her indomitable
community spirit, our very own Katie Kingston
cooked up a cupcake storm and worked
alongside Makybe staff at the recent Baldivis
Square Community Event. Thank you Katie
and staff for giving your Saturday to raise
funds for our children.
Wishing for a smooth ride through to 2019?
Now is a great time to set goals and put plans
in place to actively ensure you get the ride
you’re looking for!

Makybe Rise News Message from the Principal
In Room 14, we have recently been learning how to create persuasive wri>ng using an OREO planning template to help us. The
OREO helps us to state our Opinion, give Reasons for our opinion, Explain our reasons, and then finally restate our Opinion. We
discovered that just like an Oreo biscuit, the more fillings (Reasons and Explana>ons) we have, the more convincing/ tasty our
persuasion becomes. We recently read a hilarious book called “Do not open this book” by Andy Lee. ADer a Socra>c seminar where we discussed our
opinions and reasons, we discovered that the majority of our class wanted the book to be opened...we just had to convince the
blue man on the cover to let us. In a collabora>ve author effort, we would like to present a persuasive text as to why we should
open the book...
Why we should open the book. By: Room 14
In our strong opinion, Room 14 thinks we should open this book. Here are some great reasons why:
Firstly, the book looks really funny. For example the blue man has a hysterical face on the cover. We want to know what he will do
and say next.
Secondly, we think the blue man is being very bossy. He is holding a sign which says “Go read something else!” but he hasn’t used
any manners.
Finally, we think the blue man is tricking us. As you can see there is a lot of red crayon all over it which he has drawn, the >tle page
actually says “Open this book”.
In conclusion we should open this book because it will make us really happy
and we think the author Andy Lee would love us to do it. We hope you
agree too!
With such a strong persuasion we read the book and it was GREAT! If you
haven’t already checked it out definitely do, it will have you in fits of
laughter!

Heat Energy in Room 41Heat Energy in Room 41Heat Energy in Room 41Heat Energy in Room 41 In STEM this semester we have been learning how energy radiated from the
sun can heat lunch containers, how this causes the inside temperature to
increase, and the impact this has on the safety of our food.
We have inves>gated how heat energy from the sun transfers across a variety
of materials, affec>ng the internal temperature of lunch containers.
We conducted experiments to iden>fy materials that absorb or reflect heat,
and recorded this data as both a table and a line graph. Our findings were then
used to design and create our own lunchboxes that would keep the food inside
safe.
We are currently tes>ng our
designs and reflec>ng on their
effec>veness.

Last term the Year 6 students finished their ‘Australia as a Na>on’ HaSS topic off with two sepa-
rate lessons at Baldivis Secondary College. The first was a lecture on Australian government run
by Mr Webster in the high school’s lecture theatre. The students had the opportunity to prac-
>ce their AVID note taking skills and use the reading strategy ‘marking the text’ to find key in-
forma>on in their notes. The next lesson was on Australian parliament run by the high school
students themselves! The students in Room 17, 19, 20 and 21 par>cipated in individual
‘mock’ parliament lessons where they took on different roles in parliament and had the op-
portunity to see how a bill would be passed in real life in parliament. The high school stu-
dents delivered a fun and informa>ve lesson which was enjoyed by all of the Year 6 students
and made them excited for all of the learning to come in their future high school HaSS les-
sons. This term the Year 6’s are comple>ng a unit on migra>on which has begun with a discussion
of our family trees and whether students’ parents and grandparents were born in Australia or
have migrated from different countries. We have been exploring the different reasons that
people would migrate to Australia which include poli>cal, social or economic reasons. We are
looking forward to learning more
about migra>on this term in Year 6.

Did you know……………………………
The German alphabet has one more consonant
than English.
German and English both make use of Roman
characters. German, however, contains an extra
consonant ß, which represents a double-S. ß is unique
among German consonants in that it’s never found at
the beginning of a word. Though you can some>mes
subs>tute the double-s for “ß” if you’re using a non-
German keyboard, this only works for certain words:
Masse and Maße, for instance, mean en>rely different
things (“mass” and “dimensions”, respec>vely).
