The plasmodium (parasites) responsible for malaria are:
P. Falciparum. It is found in tropical and sub-tropical regions worldwide. It rapidly
multiplies in the blood further leading to anemia. If treatment is delayed beyond 24 hours
after the onset of clinical symptoms, it may lead to kidney and liver failure, convulsions and
coma. So, it is considered to be the most deadliest.
P. Vivax is mostly found in Latin America, Asia and some
parts of Africa. It is most prevalent especially in Asia because of population
densities. P. Vivax and P.Ovale have resting liver stages that can reactivate and
invade the blood (relapse) several months or years after mosquito bite.
P. Malariae is found across the world. If left untreated, it may causechronic
infection that in some cases may last a lifetime.
P. Ovale is mostly found in the island of Africa (especially West Africa) and Western
Pacific. It generally causes less fatal illness, but the parasites can remain inactive in the
liver for many months and may re-appear after months or even later
P.Knowelsi is found in the south-east Asia. This species takes 24 hours for
multiplication and can rapidly advance from an uncomplicated to a serious
infection.
