• There are different styles of shelters that Malians use.

• The one hut is enclosed to store different items such as beds and food.

• The other type of shelter is to create shade.

GriotGriot• The griot tells the history, as

well as the ancient traditions of dance and performing arts.

• Griot comes from the French term “keeper of memories.”

• They were employed by villages, kings or clans.

• They orally recounted the lineage of a given village or family, which can take many hours.

• The Griots still practice their craft today, but it has a tendency to remain in specific families

JewelersJewelers

• The jewelers make beautiful pieces of jewelry using beads, and metals and other materials to create necklaces, rings, and bracelets.

• It takes a great deal of time to make one piece of jewelry.

• The story plate shows how the people of ancient Mali shared stories with the next generation.

• The symbols represent different parts of the story.

• Woodcarving is another way for some of the people of Mali to make their living.

• They can sell their wares in the local market.
