ManorHouse Issue No.66 October 2016Monthly

Panther is celebratedTHE inaugural running of a contest to commem-orate the life of stable star Brown Panther, inset, took place at the Curragh on October 9.

Tragically the 2014 Irish St Leger winner, who won 11 of his 28 career starts and more than £1m in prize money, suffered a fa-tal injury in last year’s renewal of the classic.

As a result, race-course officials at the Curragh elected to rename a 1m4f Listed contest at the course in memory of Michael Owen and Andrew Black’s hugely popular stayer.

The first running of the Brown Panther Stakes was won by the Aga Khan’s Alveena.

Beyond up for auctionABOVE N Beyond is entered in Tatersalls Au-tumn Horses-in-Training Sale which is taking place at Newmarket this week [October 24-27].

Tom believes there’s more to come from the three-year-old, who has won two of his 11 starts and more than £40,000 in prize money, and would welcome calls from any-one interested in keeping the Exceed And Excel colt in the yard.

Meanwhile, the im-proving two-year-old White Chin, impressive winner of a Chelmsford nursery earlier in the month, has been sold to continue his career overseas.

TREBLE TIMEIT’S A FANTASTIC FRIDAY

THE ever-reliable Roudee bagged his biggest prize yet when landing the ultra-competitive Silver Cup at Ayr

last month.Richard Kingscote brought the four-

year-old son of Kodiac home ahead of his 24 rivals in the consolation race for those who missed out on the Ayr Gold Cup, bag-ging more than £30,000 for owners Mike Edwards, Nick Hughes, Dylan Jenkins, Ste-ve Roberts and MHS in the process.

And the success saw Tom sail past his personal best for prize money in a season – overtaking the £693,229 he earned in 2014.

“This is brilliant for everyone at Manor House and means so much,” enthused Nick afterwards. “It’s a great place to be associated with – we’re like one big fam-ily.”

His comments were echoed by Tom who said: “It was fantastic for the yard and what we’re all about. I travelled up with the owners on the 7am train and, I think it’s fair to say, everyone had a won-derful day.

“Ayr is a fantastic racecourse and the lads, who like to celebrate, had the best experience; even better than when they won the Lily Agnes with Quatuor.

“A lot of the praise has to go to Anna Hesketh. Roudee was a bit of a crazy horse, but Anna rides him every day and thanks to her he’s much more settled, re-laxed and chilled out.

“Kodiac’s a proper stallion and Roudee is typical of his progeny – tough and reli-able,” added Tom. “He won at Doncaster at the start of the season and, to his credit, was still going strong in September.

“We’ve a couple of Kodiac yearlings for sale now and if they’re anything like Roudee both are going to make good racehorses.”

Roudee’s Ayr success was his third of the year – having also won the consola-tion race for the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon in August and on his seasonal debut in April – and took his career earnings to more than £100,000.

Four Dragons one of Mel’s favourites

Joe enjoys starring part in short film

MELANIE Gray joined us as a work rider just over a year ago.

Mel has always had a passion for horses and after her older sisters started riding out for a small yard near the family home in Penrith it was odds on she would follow suit.

After graduating from the British Racing School in Newmarket, Mel worked at Donald McCain’s for two years before join-ing the team at MHS last Septem-ber.

Mel’s favourite

current MHS in-mates are Monsieur Glory and Four Dragons, while she also has fond memories of Secret Lady – not to men-tion the staff race night at Chester racecourse this summer!

When she’s not at the yard, Mel is kept busy look-ing after her own horses, which she sometimes takes eventing. She also enjoys spending time with her fam-ily and especially likes watching her two nieces, aged two and four, rid-ing their ponies.

well as some of the responsibilities he undertook. To view it, go to You Tube and search for Joe Hilton and Harper Adams.

HARPER Adams University has pro-duced a short film documenting the experience of stu-dent Joseph Hilton who helped out in the MHS office over the summer.

The film sees business manage-ment and market-ing student Joe describe the facili-ties at the yard, as

Haydock to stage raceday for charityRACING Welfare is holding a charity day at Haydock on Friday, November 18, to raise much-needed funds and increase aware-ness of its work on behalf of the sport’s workforce.

Tables of 10 are available for a champagne reception and four-course lunch in the Park Suite.

AFTER a quiet start to Oc-tober, Manor House burst into life with four winners

in the space of less than 24 hours in the middle of the month.

The purple patch began with White Chin’s victory at Chelms-ford on the evening of October 13 and continued the next day when Tom bagged a Haydock Park tre-ble, courtesy of Four Dragons, Eartha Kitt and Brogan. All four were partnered by in-form stable jockey Richard Kingscote.

The two-year-old White Chin was carrying Tom’s red, white and blue silks to victory for the second time in his last three starts when the ready winner of a six-furlong nursery at the Essex track.

Like White Chin, Four Dragons was scoring for the second time in her last three starts – and third time this season – when winning the five-furlong nursery which kicked of the next day’s Haydock card.

The two-year-old filly, who

sports the colours of Michelle O’Halloran, Paula Satchell, Lou-ise Owen and Claire Willcock, had three-quarters of a length to spare over favourite Father Mac-Kenzie at the line as she lowered the juvenile track record.

The Pivotal filly Eartha Kitt, a daughter of the yard’s 2012 Royal Ascot winner Ceiling Kitty, built on the promise of her debut third when carrying the green and mauve colours of owner-breeder Andrew Black’s Chasemore Farm operation to victory in a six-fur-long fillies’ maiden contested by a host of well-bred juveniles.

And it was three on the day for Tom and Richard and two for Andrew when Brogan, another of his home-bred fillies, ran out the game winner of the day’s pe-nultimate race, a seven-furlong nursery.

With Above N Beyond, who is owned in partnership by Andrew and Michael Owen, having won a valuable one-mile handicap at Haydock on the final Saturday in September, the Lancashire venue has proved a fruitful hunting ground over the course of recent weeks. Moreover, Tom finished the season as the course’s lead-ing trainer, while Richard took the jockey’s crown.

MHS has now had 64 winners so far this year, which is its sec-ond-highest total ever and best since 2012 when the yard en-joyed 79 successes. Moreover, it has won just short of £750,000 in UK prize money, which is £50,000 more than its previous best of £693,229 in 2014.

TOM and bloodstock agent Ed Sackville‘s continuing quest to unearth some new stars for 2017 has taken them across the Irish sea to the Tatersalls Ireland September sale.

Their purchases there in-cluded fillies by Kodiac and Sir Prancealot, as well as a

Requinto colt. Details of these and all the other yearlings Manor House currently has available for sale, beginning at just €30,000, can be found under the Horses tab on the Manor House website.

MHS will be represented at all the major yearling sales

still to take place and Tom would welcome a call from anyone interested in acquir-ing a yearling, either wholly or in shares, for next season.l To discuss the possibil-ity of purchasing a yearling to run in 2017 please call Tom on 07973 511664.

I’ve forgotten what my bed looks like

Delighted for Jim

While we’ve grown used to Aidan O’Brien setting new records, send-ing out the first three in the Arc might rank as his greatest achieve-ment yet.

When it comes to training racehorses, Martin Pipe rewrote the book and for me remains the best of all time but there’s no doubt Aidan is right up there. Of course, he benefits from Coolmore’s amazing infra-structure but, by God, he delivers the results.

It’s something to have three horses good enough to run in the Arc, but

for them to fill the first three

places is just phe-nomenal.

I’d never have

contemplated running Order Of St George at Chantilly – I don’t think many train-ers would have – but Aidan is in a league of his own and does things that might never occur to us lesser mortals.

What’s more, he’s a thoroughly nice bloke!

I’ve been to so many sales at home and abroad over the past few months, I’ve almost forgotten what my bed looks like.

On the plus side, I’d like to think we’ve acquired some really exciting two-year-olds to go to war with in 2017.

We’ve won more prize money than ever before this year, without yet having had as

many winners as we did in 2012, and I take that as a sign we’re getting better horses.

In the same vein, we’ve been spending a bit more that we have done in the past at the sales – we’ve paid more than £100,000 for five or six horses already – and, with that in mind, I’d like to think the standard will improve again next year.

I said last month how much I was hoping Jim Crowley would win the jockeys’ championship and I couldn’t be more delighted that he’s gone on and done it.

It’s a fantastic achievement,

epitomised by the incredible 46 winners he rode last month.

Jim didn’t walk into a top job when he switched codes, he’s had to work bloody hard to get where he has and should be very proud of himself.

What’s your connection with Manor House Stables? Myself and my husband Dave have had 22 horses with Manor House over the last six years. I finally got my name on one in 2014 – my darling, stunning boy Mickey. How did your association with the yard come about? Our daughter Amber wanted a horse so, with our bakery business tak-ing most of our time, it seemed a good compromise. Amber did eventually get her own horse, Henry, a 20-year-old cob, who we adore. What, in your opinion, sets Manor House apart from other yards? There’s a fantastic team who look after owners impecca-bly. There’s never a dull moment and you always come away with a huge smile on your face.Sum yourself up in five words. Caring, honest, helpful, kind and happy.Who would play you in a film of your life? Renée Zellweger [with nicer underwear].If there is one thing you could change about your life, what would it be? To have the power to keep my family and friends healthy. My mum has early vascu-lar dementia and it’s so sad to see it slowly changing her. What was the most memorable day of your racing life? Kachy winning the Molecomb at Good-wood, though having our victory dance broadcast on TV was a little embarrassing! What is your earliest racing memory? Watching the Grand National with my family. If you were taking someone racing for the first time, where would you go and why? Prob-ably to Haydock as it’s very local to us. That said, the atmosphere at Chester is always amazing. What was the last film you saw? Bridget Jones’ Baby. What was the last book you read? Broken Promise by Linwood Barclay. If you had to choose a single ‘Desert Island Disc’ what would it be? I have three special ones: Foreigner’s Waiting For a Girl Like You, Bon Jovi’s Always and I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing by Aeros-mith.Who do you most admire? My soul mate Dave and my fantastic children Ethan and Amber.Who’s your favourite-ever

Horses put a big smile on my face

TOM’S TAKEManor House’s main man shares his thoughts on the Sport of Kings and life at large

horse? Stepping Out is the sweet-est girl and gave everything on the track, while Henry keeps me smiling every day. What TV show do you always switch off? Anything involving cruelty to animals. What would be your specialist subject on Mastermind? Horse rugs. I have a garage full of them. What football team do you sup-port? At school, like most of the girls, I supported Tottenham Hot-spur, but only because I fancied Glen Hoddle. What is the strangest / funniest thing you have ever seen on a racecourse? Dave and Michael having a bet on a charity race be-tween two men at Haydock a few years ago.

Give us a trainer and jockey to watch out for in 2016. Dave Loughnane and, fingers crossed, an apprentice jockey from MHS.

What’s your greatest extrava-gance / guiltiest pleasure? Racehorses; Henry, who is spoilt rotten; and horse rugs.

What makes you depressed? Not seeing Henry. After a long, stressful day at work he melts my heart and destresses me.

If you could invite four celebri-ties / historical figures to a dinner party who would they be? Bryan Adams, Steven Taylor, Jon Bon Jovi and, as a result of my midlife crisis, Joey Essex.

What’s the most-important les-son life has taught you? Cherish

every possi-ble moment with your family and friends.

How would you like to be remem-bered? As a nice person.

MHS stable jockey Richard Kingscote is closing in on his maiden century of

winners.Richard has enjoyed 93 victo-

ries so far this year – equalling his previous best. He was seven short of his century in November 2012 when a horrific five-horse pile-up at Wolverhampton left him seri-ously injured and forced to spend five months on the sidelines.

Interviewed on At The Races last Monday, Richard said: “[My]

Richard closes in on first 100

Numbers are the best they’ve ever been. I’m hoping for 100 [winners] and it looks do-able.

“Tom’s got some nice ammu-nition coming through and has had a solid season with some nice horses. All in all, it’s been a very good year.”

Just under 50 per cent of Rich-ard’s victories this year [47] have come aboard MHS inmates, while Ralph Beckett has been responsi-ble for seven of his victories.

Richard has also ridden winners

for such high-profile trainers as Roger Charlton, Charlie Hills, Mark Johnston and Sir Michael Stoute, while he recently rode his first winner for John Gosden when partnering Andrew Black’s two-year-old filly Illaunmore to victory in a Kempton maiden.

Having ridden his first winner as recently as 2004, Richard’s do-mestic career total now stands at an impressive 754 and he has ac-cumulated almost £6.5m in prize money.
