PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

This month Jews around the world celebrate Purim. A holiday that reflects a woman, Hadassah, who saved the Jewish people of Persia from certain annihilation. While that is traditionally true, there is another woman who paved the way for Hadassah, Vashti. Vashti has traditionally been overlooked as a heroine because she stood up to the men in charge and fought for her right to speak for herself and her body. As the story traditionally is told King Ahasuerus while drunk ordered his Queen (Vashti) to dance naked in front of the men in attendance. Fully aware of her status as Queen, she refused and was dethroned as queen because the men were afraid that as word spread throughout Persia that more wives would disobey their husbands. Now much has been written about why she refused (Rashi claimed that she had leprosy, other scholars opined that she had sprouted a tail) but the simplest explanation is that she refused to dance naked for the King and his men due to her self-respect. And Queen Esther certainly learned from Vashti, that if she needed to get something done then she needed to circumvent direct confrontation and use her smarts to save the Jewish people.

Hadassah (the organization) also finds itself straddling these two disparate forms of action. For nearly 100 years, Hadassah Medical Organization has been a leader in medicine and nursing in Israel, laying the foundation and setting the standards for the country's modern health care system. Hadassah has developed Israel's community health services, established the first modern hospital and medical and nursing schools, and set the climate for medical research in Israel. Much like Vashti, we have had to

forge ahead, making inroads and paths where there was once barren land.

And like our namesake Hadassah, we work inside the system creating Hadassah University Medical Center - Israel's only academic medical institution that combines teaching and training on one campus. Together with the Hebrew University, Hadassah provides outstanding education and clinical experience through its schools of medicine, nursing, dental medicine, public health and occupational therapy and enjoys a synergistic relationship in many aspects of medical research, among them Hadassah Medical Center-Hebrew University Biotechnology Park.

With your support of time and money we can continue our support of both of these traditions - one that breaks new ground in research and development and one that continues the continuous care and treatment of individuals in Israel.

Please join us at the Chapter “Jeans and Jewels” Dance Party on March 12th at Legacy Hall in Voorhees. Your support of this major fundraiser allows us to continue the life saving work we do in Israel. Renew your spirit by attending Hadassah Shabbat being held on March 18th at Congregation Ner Tamid here in Cherry Hill. Every event you attend from a group’s monthly meeting to fundraising events to Shabbat programs to book clubs helps keep Hadassah strong and vibrant and allows us to provide support to Israel! Shabbat Dinner: Prior to the service, time is tentatively 6:00 or 6:30 pm, we are planning to have a Shabbat dinner at the synagogue for anyone interested in attending. Due to space limitation, attendance will be limited to 50 people, so please reach out to me ASAP if you’re interested in attending. THERE IS STILL SPACE AVAILABLE FOR THE DINNER. We will be ordering a ”traditional” Shabbat dinner from the Kosher Experience, and the cost of the meal has not yet been determined.

Service: Our service will begin at 8:00 pm, and WE, the members of Camden County Hadassah, will be leading the entire service! Of course, we’re hoping for a large turnout, and encourage everyone to attend. Family members and friends are also welcome! PLEASE consider taking part in the service (plenty of Hebrew and English parts are available) by reaching out to me or contacting your group Education VP and letting us know your interest. Parts will be assigned within the next few weeks.

Oneg Shabbat: The service will be followed by a beautiful and delicious Oneg Shabbat.

Contact Barbara Frantz with any questions and to RSVP to the dinner or to participate in the service.

We hope to see you at our Hadassah Shabbat,

Did something new happen at the Kotel in Jerusalem? Yes, it did, on January 31, the Israeli government voted to approve the expansion of the Kotel/Western Wall plaza to accommodate a space for egalitarian prayer. This decision ensures that Judaism’s holiest site is accessible to all Jews. All women should have the right to pray, individually and collectively, freely, without harassment, and in accordance with their own religious practices.

The Israeli government agrees to create separate expansion of a mixed-gender, non-orthodox prayer space at the Western Wall. No formal vote was taken on the plan due to ultra-Orthodox reservations, because it would be perceived as recognition of a non-Orthodox group. Reform, Masorti movements

say compromises were necessary, Haredi Jews voted against this decision, but they did not fight to defeat it. The new area, called Azarat Yisrael, is to be located in the Western Wall plaza’s southernmost corner underneath Robinson’s Arch, which has already been frequently used for egalitarian prayer services. The Women of the Wall group, which fights for women’s rights to pray at Judaism’s holiest accessi-ble site, where motivated by the cabinet decision.

Here, men and women are praying together. The Reform, Masorti movements held services where Tammy Gottlieb served as sh’lihat tzibbur.

Dear Tikvah Members,

What have you done with your extra month? Did you notice that there was more time between Tu B’Shevat and Purim? That is because we add an extra month of Adar this year so that Pesach will come in the spring. Did you read a lot while snow lay on the ground? Did you make extra phone calls? Did you do something special for Hadassah? It is always the right time to make special efforts so study the bulletin and choose what you wish to support: “Jeans & Jewels”, Hadassah Shabbat and the other events coming up.

Our next meeting cooperates with the Hazak Group at Temple Beth Sholom on March 17 at 1PM. Our friend, Dr. Marvin Herring, will present “Pain, Suffering & Pain Remedies from Biblical to Modern Times”. Anyone who knows Marv’s lectures will realize this event will be less that painful to hear as he is always witty and well prepared.

Hope to see you there, Happy Purim!

Miriam Grossmann, President

March meeting…

Tikvah & Temple Beth Sholom Hazak combined meeting...

Thursday, March 17th, 1PM at Temple Beth Sholom

Program: Speaker Dr. Marvin Herring

Topic: A Jewish History of Pain and Suffering from Biblical to Modern Times

Dr. Herring will narrate and illustrate Pagan beliefs, Biblical accounts, Medieval Mishaps, and a Tale of Opium and its 5,000 years of impact on the world stage. Expect a few side trips to Maimonides, some Jewish home remedies, and a few interesting surprises, as you also learn about a pharmacology that may revolutionize a yet unreached mastery over Pain. Please join us for what should be a very interesting and enjoyable afternoon!

Annual Personal Pledge letters were mailed in February to all Tikvah members. We hope that we can once again count on your support this year. Your donation makes it possible for Hadassah to continue our life saving work in Israel. Take a minute and send in your pledge today! You can send a check at this time or fulfill your pledge by December 15, 2016. Thank you!

Shirley Werner, Annual Personal Pledge Chair
