Marco Filippeschi - Mayor of Pisa

The benefits of investing in the automated People Mover

Brussels September 15-2016

Pisa Master Plan

Inside the Conference on the future of transport policy inBrussels on 9 to 10 March 2009 it has been highlighted as thecity of Pisa is favored by an optimal integration between airsystem, public transport, rail and sea.

Pisa drew up a "master plan" whose design lines are inter-modality - optimization of environmental strategies-diversified transportation systems through a frequent andsustainable connection systems for the city. The objectives ofthe master plan presented were all reached; the mainachievement was the People Mover project.

The GREEN MOBILITY “PEOPLE MOVER” PROJECT will start operating onnext months. It will provide a 24/7 service ( every 6/10 min)connectingthe Galileo Galilei airport with Pisa Central Station. The project has beenfinanced by FESR European funds

PEOPLE MOVER PROJECTVIDEO

Expected benefits from People Mover

Integration with mobility systems:

• Airport

• Railway station

• Bus Terminal urban / suburban

• Links to park and ride / bike sharing stations

Openness to new mobility projects:

• via tramway connection Hospital

• Connection to urban water boat

MUNICIPALITY OF PISA -TOWARDS SUMP

Sala Mimosa 1 - Padiglione B6 - Rimini

Pisa share the aim of the Commission in order to promote a mobility that isefficient, safe, secure and environmentally friendly and to create theconditions for a competitive industry generating growth and jobs.

A Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) has its central goal:- improving accessibility of urban areas- providing high life quality- sustainable mobility and transport

The Municipality of Pisa has launched a partecipation processover an urban sustainable mobility (SUMP)

The campaign has been extremelysuccessful, as participation (6220citizens), and was focused on peopleneeds and on an integrated urbanmobility development, based onefficient and sustainable frameworkand tools, dedicated mainly to urbantransports. Starting from the analysisof the replies we will may decidefurther strategies for the city.

Mobility Smart Projects already issued

• Smart bike-sharing (CicloPi)

• Rfid -PisaPass (parking permits system)

• Parking mobile App

• Variable message signs and trafficcounters sensors

• Parking spot sensors

• RFID gates

• Centralised traffic-lights

Bike Sharing

The Bike sharing project is the first in Italy as the ratio number of bikes withdrawals / per capita

• 24 stations

• 350 bike spots

• 150 bikes on street

• 600 trips per day

• 4500 subscriptions

Stations located near the maininterchage points and touristattractions

MOBILITY URBAN TOOLS

PisaPass Project

1) Card with RFid passive tag on-board, replacing old permits and subscriptions to car parks

2) Actually distributed about 30.000 permits/year

First italian project based on RFID technology

Variable message sign panels

• Positioned along main streets

• We can reach the citizen with simplemessages visualized on them

• Integrated with counter traffic sensors to monitor urban traffic flow

MOBILITY URBAN TOOLS

Implementation of 10 RFID gates

to analyze citizen movements with PisaPass

Card on board

Centralized traffic-light managementWe are now working to be able to change the colour of

everytraffic-light in city, according to specific conditions in time and space

MOBILITY URBAN TOOLS

Parking spots detection• Available in two central squares of Pisa.

• Allows to give information to user about the free parking spots by means of led-message-panels and parking mobile app.

• Optimises the reasearch of the parking spot, produces traffic reduction and allows Traffic Big Data analisys.

The goal of Pisa’s SUMP: Beyond People Mover! An integrated urban vision

Integrate all data coming fromfield: led-message signs, sensors,Rfid gates and more, in a centraldatabase:

1. To know the real urban mobility

2. To model the traffic

3. To act in real time on centralizedtraffic lights

4. To check the impact of newchoices on street flows

5. To inform in real time the citizenabout the traffic flows and theavailability of parking spots
