ACADEMY NEWS
The St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy community would like to thank Mrs. Marilyn Zilinski for her
33 years of hard work, dedication and service to
our academy.
She has been an important part of our lives and has helped many students over the years. Mrs.
Zilinski always had a welcoming smile when greeting people at the door and a pleasant voice when
answering the phone. She handled each and every busy school day with grace and ease. She is much loved and will be dearly missed by all.
We wish her a very happy and healthy retirement.
May God Bless Mrs. Zilinski during this
next stage in her life.

your Will.
SUMMER WEATHER As the warm weather approaches, we
are blessed to have air conditioning in
our Church to keep us cool.
Unfortunately, it is not easy to please
everyone. Some say it’s too cool,
others say it’s not cool enough. A
suggestion that you bring a sweater
might help to solve the situation if you
feel the cold. Also, if it’s a sunny day,
you may want to sit on the schoolyard
side of Church, where it is usually
warmer from the suns rays coming in
through the windows. Thank you.
SUMMER MONTHS
As we did last summer, we will be reciting the Gloria from July 1st to
September 2nd. The Gloria is a beautiful
prayer and reciting it will enable us to
reflect on the words we pray and come to a better
appreciation of this prayer.
SUMMER WEEKLY COLLECTIONS
As the nice weather provides us with weekend opportunities to get away, please
remember the importance of your weekly offerings. While the summer months
bring a dip in our mass attendance and weekly offerings, it is important that we
try to meet our normal operating expenses. Those expenses do not change with
the summer season.
Please consider submitting your summer envelopes before you leave for vacation.
Those monies help us pay our summer bills and keep our budget balanced. As you
know our fiscal year ends August 31, 2018, so it is important we maintain a
balanced budget. I appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
As always, thank you for your understanding, your generosity, and your spirit of
sacrificial giving.
Have a peaceful, prayerful, enjoyable and safe summer!

RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION
Just a reminder when coming up to
receive Holy Communion, and after
receiving Jesus, one should be
thinking of the wonderful privilege as a
Catholic to receive Jesus,
that special time we have with our Lord and
Savior.
It is not a time to allow oneself to be
distracted by looking all around, waving,
shaking hands or kissing the person on the
end of the pew. The Roman Missal states
that, “one should prepare by
praying quietly, so that one may fruitfully
receive the Body and Blood of Christ”.
CONGRATULATIONS to Father Christopher
Turczany
being named the pastor of
St. Mary’s in Long Island City.
Fr. Chris has been helping us on
the weekends these past few
months and will finish the end of
June. His new assignment begins
on June 30th.
We want to assure him of our
prayers and wish him well as he
shepherds the people of St.
Mary’s.
YONKERS TRIP
Anyone interested in going on the
Yonkers trip on Thursday,
July 12th,
please call Ann at
718-726-3270.
Next weekend there will be a
2nd Collection for Air Conditioning.
Thank you for your
generosity and support.
The Rectory
Office
will be closed on
Wednesday,
July 4th
in observance of
Independence
Day.
WELCOME
We welcome back Father
Francis Chidume.
Fr. Chidume has been
coming to us for the past
few summers and will be
here to assist us during the
month of July.
PAINTING OF THE CHURCH
They have begun the outside work on our church. Artec, the company who did the work inside the church for the 85th anniversary will be doing the job. They will remove all the cracked and loose
wood shingles on the church and replace them with new ones. They will brush clean the entire façade, apply a primer
sealer and then apply two coats of exte-rior paint for the wood shingles.
In addition, they will work on the
handicap ramp. They plan to remove the lattice guards and replace them with
new ones, power wash the ramp, reinforce every support leg, replace
corroded brackets as needed, replace the lumber on the ramp, and apply two
coats of paint to the wood, matching the color of the church. This work is needed since our church has not been painted in
over 25 years.
The monies for this project will come from the returns of the Generations of Faith Campaign and from last year’s
Fall Festival. Your generosity and support of the campaign and the Fall Festival is enabling this work on our
church to be done.
THANK YOU for the many sacrifices you continually make to support our
parish.
Msgr. Maresca
CHURCH FIRE EXIT SIGNS
I’m sure at one time; you were confront-
ed with an unexpected project!
The Fire Department paid me a visit
and inspected the buildings. They
informed me that the law requires that
any assembly place, and Church is an
assembly place, is required by New York
City law to have Fire Exit Signs. Since
we do not have them in Church, I was
told I have to install them. If they are
not installed, a fine will be given to the
Church and then I still have to have
them installed.
I am in the process of having 3 NYC
approved exit signs installed in the main
body of the Church. Each sign will be
clear with green lettering. They will be
installed at the 2 side doors and the
main entrance. All the work will be done
in compliance with local and national
codes. The cost of this project is
$5,875.00.
I know how supportive you are of our
parish and I’m asking if you are able to
donate any amount to this project to help
defray the cost, I will be so appreciative.
What we do not receive in donations will
have to come from the general funds of
the parish. As of June 12th, $4,768.00
has been donated.
Thank you for whatever you are able to
contribute.
Msgr. Maresca
Society of St. Vincent de Paul Gives Back
For each car, truck or van, running or not, St. Vincent de Paul will give back to St.
Francis of Assisi $50/100 per vehicle. Maybe you don’t have a
vehicle, but a family member, friend or neighbor has an old or neglected
vehicle in their driveway that they would like to dispose of.
Call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at
(718) 491-2525.
PARISH PROPERTY
It has been brought to my attention that skate boarders are using the front steps of church to skate off of. This is not safe and
will chip the edges of the church steps. Please make sure that your child and their
friends are not among these children. If you should happen to drive by church and see
this happening, I would appreciate it if you would ask them to leave. I have gone out a few times to tell them to leave because it is
not safe.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Dear Parents/Guardians, Registration is now taking place for the 2018 – 2019 Religious Education year. Please fill out and return the attached 2018-2019 Religious Education registration form as soon as possible. This will reserve your child’s seat for the upcoming year and reduce the number of people registering on the first day of class. The tuition fee can be paid on the first day of class, September 23, 2018 and will remain unchanged [$100 for one child and $175 for two or more children]. Every family must fill out the full registration form. It is important for better communication that you provide updated contact information, especially a working email address. Your information will not be given to anyone, but it will be used to keep you informed of class schedules, activities, and required events (especially for sacrament preparation). You can also email me at dre@sfaacademy.org in order to supply your email.
Continuous attendance of Religious Education, from 1st through 8th grade, is important to the Faith Formation development of your child and a Diocese of Brooklyn requirement. In order for your child to receive the sacrament of Confirmation with their class, (s)he must be enrolled continuously from 1st through 8th grade. Each year covers material which builds a foundation for students to be prepared to complete the sacraments of initiation. If your family is struggling with a scheduling conflict, please contact our office and we can work together to find a solution. The present number of dedicated volunteers just barely meets our needs. New volunteers are always needed to be catechists, hall or door monitors, substitutes, class parent, etc. St. Francis of Assisi will supply any instruction needed. Please consider helping out with spreading the faith to the future of the church. Please call or email our office; or check off the box on the registration form and I will contact you about how you would like to help. Thank you for being a part of our St. Francis of Assisi Community and for your continued support of our program. If you have any concerns or suggestions, please contact me. I would be happy to hear from you. Yours in Christ, Kristina Blair Director of Faith Formation
