Math 5Measure Volume Using
Cubic Units
Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner
In this lesson we will learn how to measure volume
using cubic units.
Math Warm-up
Do this problem mentally.
Begin with $0.25Multiply by 8.Subtract $0.90.Divide by 2.
Math Warm-up - ANSWER
Do this problem mentally.
Begin with $0.25Multiply by 8.Subtract $0.90.Divide by 2.$0.55
In this lesson we will answer the question:
How do you measure volume?Pause this lesson & Print out the attached document for lesson 54, Fill ‘Er Up. I will use it to demonstrate how you should do it. You will complete it independently at the end of the lesson.
Vocabulary Reviewgeometric solid- a figure that has three dimensions and takes up space
polyhedron – another name for a 3-D figure, which means ‘many faces’
Vocabularyvolume- the number of cubic units needed to fill a solid figure (measured as u3)
cubic unit – the volume of a cube that measures 1 unit on each edge
Vocabularyrectangular prism- A solid (3-dimensional) object which has six faces that are rectangles
prism – solid with two congruent parallel bases and faces that are parallelograms
Vocabularyrectangular prism- A solid (3-dimensional) object which has six faces that are rectangles
depth – extend downward or backward or inward; "the depth of the water"; "depth of a shelf"; "depth of a closet"
Connecting to Previous Learning
In the last lesson, you learned about the attributes of a geometric solid. In this lesson, you will learn how to measure the volume of a solid. This is similar to measuring the area of a 2-D object.
Volume is measured in cubic units. Two common units of volume are the cubic centimeter and the cubic inch. The volume of a rectangular prism is a measure of how much space the object takes up.

We will work a few of these together. You will finish filling in the chart for homework, after the lesson. You may work with a partner to do so. Use the website to complete the activity.
How do we calculate the volume of this object?
Try these on your own:
1.
2.
Lesson Review
Volume is the amount it takes to fill up a solid, or 3-D figure. It is measured in cubic units. (u3)
Quick CheckIn your Math Notebook
1. Which dimensions can be measured in a prism?
2. Define volume in your own words.
Quick Check
Find the volume of this cube. Include the correct unit of measure.
Quick Check - ANSWERS
1. Which dimensions can be measured in a prism?
Length, width (or depth), and height
2. Define volume in your own words.Your definition should include something about solids, or 3-D figures, and the space that they take up. It may also include something about measuring with cubic units.
Quick Check
Find the volume of this cube. Include the correct unit of measure.
60 cm3, or 60 cubic centimeters
Today you learned how to find the volume of a rectangular prism using cubic units.
Good Work with this
lesson.
