Professor Rosemary Armao recently dropped a bomb on all of us at WAMC when she announced that she was retiring from the University at Albany where she had a full-time, tenured position as Associate Professor (harder to find than a gold mine.) She will soon be working with investigative journalists all over the world, teaching them the tools of their trade. To put it mildly, doing this puts her in real physical danger. It also means, of course, that she will no longer be a nearly daily presence on The Round-table and a participant on The Media Project.
As a retired academic myself, I have nothing but admira-tion for this remarkable woman who defies all the odds. She truly speaks her mind. For the most part, she is progressive in orientation but I have seen her take posi-tions which invite anger from those on the traditional left. Her advocacy of Hillary Clinton's candidacy annoyed a lot of the Bernie Sanders supporters. I know full well what it means to debate with Rosemary. Some of our listeners took our jousting for other than what it was, at least on my part — a loving competition over ideas and philosophical positions.
I know from the e-mails we get that Rosemary has a loyal and devoted group of feminist supporters who admire her defiance of conventional wisdom.
In any case, Rosemary Armao's departure has upset many of her followers who appreciate both her depth of knowledge and infectious wit. People who have heard of Rosemary's decision have to acknowledge, however, that the greater purpose to which she has dedicated her life is even more important than being on the radio. Of course, we have already received her assurance that no matter where she is, she will immediately become our correspon-dent from that place. Her first port of call will be Jordan and while we may have to put up with some iffy cell phone quality, it will be worth it to hook into her perspective.
In some areas, Rosemary seems to be somewhat intoler-ant. When newspapers screw up she is quick to call them on their failures. Donald Trump is a favorite target, to the delight of so many of our listeners. When her students don't work hard enough, she certainly hasn't reserved her opinions about that.
Rosemary Armao has been great about the academy. I have always believed that holding a Ph.D. is hardly an as-surance of knowledge. I have known brilliant people with doctorates and some very foolish and stupid people with the same degree. Students want to learn from Rosemary and adore her because she had done it all and isn't just reading about it.
Every time Rosemary takes some time off to go work in a dangerous place somewhere in the world, someone writes to the Roundtable and seems to imply that we have fired her. We have gone out of our way to tell these fool-ish people that Rosemary calls her own shots. No one — no dean, no academic, no radio station executive —tells this great lady what to do or say.
I happen to know that because of her widespread opin-ions that are heard outside the usual academic circles, Rosemary has heard from those in the academic su-perstructure that she ought to, well, be careful. She has not stood still for that. If she had, she sure wouldn't be Rosemary Armao we know and love. We are sure going to miss this remarkable woman.
On another subject, we have a fund drive coming up in the first week in June. There are those people who an put up a challenge to make the whole thing work. No after what size, and some have been whoppers, they work. If you can write or call me with such a challenge I will be very grateful. I'm alan@WAMC.org. We are in a very dark period. With your help, we'll survive.

We have reached the end of the 2016/2017 Metropolitan Opera Matinée Broadcasts! The final broadcast of the Met’s season will air May 13th at 1PM. Radio Deluxe returns to its Saturday 2PM-4PM broadcast time start-ing May 20th! The Met Opera 2017/2018 season will run Saturdays from December 2nd, 2017-May 5th, 2018.
Coming up this month at The Met:
Saturday, May 6th @ 1PM — Franco Alfano’s Cyrano de Bergerac
The comedy/tragedy of Cyrano de Bergerac and his beloved Roxane, a love story for the ages, comes alive in this rediscovered operatic gem. The title role is a signa-ture part for the charismatic star tenor Roberto Alagna, performing it with the company for the first time opposite rising star Jennifer Rowley, who plays his secret love. Marco Armiliato conducts.
Saturday, May 13th @1PM — Der Rosenkavalier by Rich-ard Strauss
The dream cast of Renée Fleming as the Marschallin and Elīna Garanča as Octavian star in Strauss’s grandest opera. In his new production, Robert Carsen, the director behind the Met’s recent Falstaff, places the action at the end of the Habsburg Empire, underscoring the opera’s subtext of class and conflict against a rich backdrop of gilt and red damask, in a staging that also stars Günther Groissböck as Baron Ochs. Sebastian Weigle conducts the sparklingly perfect score.
Join us on Memorial Day (Monday, May 29th) for the following specials:
9AM — Dreams of the Fallen: Music of Honor and Re-membrance for Memorial Day
In the United States, Memorial Day is often thought of as the unofficial beginning of summer, but its significance to this country runs far deeper. “Dreams of the Fallen” seeks to recognize and memorialize through music and poetry those who have protected our country — often at great sacrifice — from before its founding to the present. From “Taps” to Britten’s War Requiem to numerous film scores and folk songs, conflict and memory have inspired some of the greatest music in history. This special draws
from a broad variety of composers and styles, linking them with the spoken remembrances of soldiers, veter-ans, and poetry to help unify and console. This special’s title is taken from its centerpiece, a short masterwork by young American composer Jake Runestad, Dreams of the Fallen. The work sets the poetry of Iraq war veteran Brian Turner and features pianist Jeffrey Biegel and the choir VocalEssence.
2PM — Front Lines: A Selected Shorts Memorial Day Special
On Memorial Day, we honor soldiers who have given their lives in battle, and remember also those who are still serving. On this special Selected Shorts program, we hear four works that look at the experience of war in different ways, from the real-life account of an officer to a futurist’s fantasy.
Our first reading is from the anthology Operation Home-coming: Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Home Front, in the Words of U.S. Troops and Their Families. “Dear Boys” was a selection of emails written by Lieutenant Colonel Chris Cohoes to his young sons while he was serving in the Middle East. One of them is read here by Mat-thew Modine. Our second story imagines the experience of a former slave serving in the British Army during the Revolutionary War. Charles Johnson’s “A Soldier for the Crown,” is read by Ruben Santiago-Hudson.
Our third story is Robert Olen Butler’s “A Mother in the Trenches,” in which a determined woman visits her son on the front lines of France during World War I. The reader is Kathleen Chalfant. Our final story is by the late Brazilian writer Moacyr Scliar. His comically dystopian “Peace and War” imagines war as just another clock-punching job. It’s read by Michael Cristofer.
