Case 1 (iv)Narrative Pattrens in the Shahnameh

MDST 3559: DataestheticsProf. Alvarado03/31/2011

Business

• Comments working?

Review

• Method– “Distant Reading”– Cultural Analytics is like archaeology

• Image Graphs– Use of X and Y space to show dimensions– E.g. Narrative Time vs. Manuscript Tradition

• See V5– Code Review: Using arrays to transform data structures– Visualization Review

Method 2: Use the Array Pattern

• Create a new array to store the results of your “data loop”– The foreach() loop where you grab rows and columns

• Second array will mirror the X / Y structure of the visualization we want– Remember that arrays are like this:

$array[X][Y][Z];

• More complicated at first, but more effective and elegant– Gives you greater control

• See v3.ph, etc.

What is added by V5?

• Some MSs emphasize certain sequences– Contrast with the first viz, which showed which

episodes are emphasized• Examples– EP 390—416 (PECK)– EP 832—901 (PECK)– EP 101—116 (58G)

Overview

• Begin where we left off– RUSTAM : KAY KAUS :: IMAGE : TEXT?

• Review story behind the “hot spot” from our visualization

• Read the story for patterns • Explore techniques for visualizing narrative

patterns

Actually, Rustam Big in Text Too

• RUSTAM = 121• KAY KHUSRAW = 80• KHUSRAW PARWIZ = 57

Interesting that the central figure in a Book of Kings is not a King

Let’s drill down into the text to find out more

Recurring patterns and structures imply cultural models

Political OrganizationKING / COUNCILLOR (PRIEST) / WARRIOR

Nature of PowerRoyal Power is fragile and dependent

Now, How to Describe and Represent?

Other Patterns

• Characteristic events (event types) and sequences– E.g. drinking wine

• Implied social networks• Next week, we will look at these patterns and

explore tools to visualize them
