Lower gas prices means more moneysaved by the School District of Menomonee Falls in its bus transportationcontract.
At the Jan. 25 School Board meetingthe board discussed a request to extendthe current contract with Johnson BusService, which was first approved in 2013for three years with an option to extendfor two more years.
"The terms of the contract are asfavorable we're going to get," board mem-
ber Scott Ternes said.Ternes said "one of the best things"
about the current contract is a fuel rebateprovision that will rebate money to thedistrict if price of gas drops.
According to information provided tothe board, the fuel cost modifier willreduce the district transportation costs by$40,000 next year, which will offset a 2.5percent ($50,000) increase.
Keith Brightman, director of finance, added that a full request for proposal willbe issued by the district at the end of thecurrent contract. The board will take finalaction on the contract extension at itsnext meeting.
School calendar approvedThe board approved the school calen-
dar for the 2016-17 school year. Under thecalendar, school will start on Sept. 1. Thedate is the earliest public school districtscan begin school. There is bill pending inthe Legislature that would allow anexemption for high schools in districtswhere at least 20 percent of students takeat least one Advanced Placement course.Advance Placement courses are college-level courses offered at the high school
level.District staff had prepared a calendar
with a start date prior to Sept. 1 and itwas discussed with the board.
"We have decided that the best calen-dar to recommend at this time would bewith the Sept. 1 start date," Director of Human Resources Cari Brust said.
No seats for open enrollmentThe district will not offer any seats
through the open enrollment or Chapter220 programs. Chapter 220 is a voluntaryprogram under which minority studentsfrom Milwaukee can attend suburban

The School District of MenomoneeFalls is considering changes to the highschool drama program.
School Board member David Noshaysummarized discussions taking place atthe Curriculum and InstructionCommittee during a committee report
at the Jan. 25 School Board meeting.Noshay said high school Principal CoreyGolla and Director of Curriculum andInstruction Gary Kiltz updated thecommittee on the school drama pro-gram. He explained that there is cur-rently no coordinated coursework intheater and drama that aligns with co-curricular activities.
"As the district moves forward witha creative academy, revisions to mediastudies and the development of course-work around media, marketing andcommunications, the recommendation
is to shift away from traditional stageproductions to digital productions in amore relevant and engaging (way) forstudents," Noshay said, summarizingcommittee discussion. "Students willget a great experience around produc-tion, but in a venue that is more cur-
rent than a typical theater venue mov-ing forward."
Noshay said the proposed changesopens up opportunities in careers thatare viable in the region and will providestudents with experiences that are mar-ketable.
"(The) committee recommendedproviding a mix of productions toinclude a children's theater production, band revue and a Fall film festival. Moreto come on that," Noshay said.

schools and nonminority students fromsuburban schools can attend Milwaukeeschools. Under open enrollment, stu-dents can attend public school outsidetheir resident district if other districtshave available seats. The parents orguardians are responsible for providingtransportation.
Kathy Young, director of pupil serv-ices, said that no Chapter 220 seats willbe offered because the district's resi-dent minority population is at 23.1 per-cent. She said no open enrollment seatswill be offered because enrollment in
the district is at or above the lowestrecommendation to add seats.
Superintendent Patricia Greco saidthis is the first time the district is notoffering any seats through open enroll-ment.
"We're making the decision based onwhere current enrollment is positionedand also, should the referendum not besuccessful, in the likelihood that wemay have to reconfigure the elementaryschools," Greco said.
She said the district will have moreinformation in February for the commu-nity on decisions that would be consid-ered based on the outcome of the refer-endum.

Many Americans and Canadians knoweach February is Black History Month, amonth dedicated to observing the historyof the African diaspora is several coun-tries outside Africa. The month is meantto educate people about the culture of those, including African-Americans, wholeft Africa and celebrate their various
achievements in all walks of life. The origins of Black History Month
can be traced to Harvard-trained historianCarter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E.Moorland. Woodson and Moorland found-
ed the Association for the Study of NegroLife and History, or ASNLH. This organiza-tion dedicated itself to researching andpromoting the achievements of blackAmericans and others of African descent.
In 1926, the ASNLH sponsored anational Negro History Week and chosethe second week of February for the cele-

the famed former slave who rose to promi-nence as a social reformer, writer, orator, and statesman.
Negro History Week proved inspiringto communities across the country, whoorganized local celebrations and estab-lished historical clubs to study the histo-ry of black Americans while educating
others as well. Negro History Week provedso popular that, by the late 1960s, it hadevolved into Black History Week. Manycredit the Civil Rights Movement for thechange, which initially took place on col-

Menomonee Falls was within min-utes of pulling off its second GreaterMetro Conference upset within threeweeks, but conference leader MilwaukeeMarquette stopped the Indians to win62-56 Jan. 26.
The teams entered halftime tied at26-26. A layup by Justin Gruber gaveMenomonee Falls a 37-34 lead with11:54 remaining. But a zone employed

But Menomonee Falls rallied and athree-point basket by Bryce McMurtrycut Marquette's lead to 57-56 with 35.9seconds remaining. Joe Alexanderanswered for the Hilltoppers by con-verting two free throws at the other end
and then Marquette's defense forced aloose ball with less than 20 secondsremaining, which was recovered byMarquette. Jack Dwyer and Wright con-verted free throws to close out the gamefor the Hilltoppers.
"All you ask for is an opportunityand we had an opportunity to win thegame there," Menomonee Falls CoachBen Farley said afterward."I'm really
