Available Gate Modes – Gates A & B
Each evaluation gate (A, B) in the Mentor UT has these modes:
• Flank – TOF at first crossing of the gate threshold, amplitude to peak anywhere in the gate
• J-Flank – TOF at first crossing, amplitude at the peak immediately following the crossing
• Peak – TOF and amplitude both measured at the peak
• Zero After – TOF measured at the first zero crossing after the threshold is broken
• Zero Before – TOF measured at the first zero crossing before the threshold is broken

Available Gate Modes – IF Gate
Because the IF gate is used to trigger other actions, and retriggering is resource intensive, only a subset of the modes are available
• Flank
• Zero After

Flank Mode
Often used in a combination flaw/thickness inspection to find thinnest spot or shallowest flaw, while also showing larger reflectors deeper in the part.

Typically used in corrosion scanning to identify both the TOF and amplitude of the thinnest spot on the material.

Typically used when the most precise TOF or depth measurements are desired. It’s easier to make a precise measurement of TOF where the amplitude slope is steepest.
