Carpe Diem. That’s been our motto since we got started in 1926. Officially, it’s Latin for “Seize the Day.” But to us, it means so much more.
Carpe Diem means that Mercyhurst students never stop exploring, from within our gates to around the globe. Here, you’ll have the freedom to discover not only what you want to do – but who you are and who you can become.
College is about getting hands-on opportunities in the field you love. Growing with the guidance of professors who truly care about your success. And – of course – having adventures with new friends you meet along the way.
So when you’ve turned your tassel and it’s time to head out into the real world, you will be ready – just like thousands of Mercyhurst graduates before you.
But don’t take our word for it.
Pass through these gates and discover Mercyhurst for yourself.

As a student, you’ll have access to more than 280 faculty members eager to share years of invaluable training and field experience—and in many cases work side-by-side with you on exciting research projects. Not only do we employ some of the nation’s brightest academic minds, Mercyhurst professors are approachable and dependable. Even as freshmen, students land unique opportunities to collaborate with notable faculty who are both your biggest advocates and personal mentors who guide you on your path to knowledge, growth and success.

When storms damaged a national landmark archaeological site that changed history, a group of Mercyhurst students got an experience that changed their lives. Students in our world-renowned archaeology program spent more than two weeks this summer working to re-excavate a portion of Meadowcroft Rockshelter, on record as the earliest well-dated archaeological site in North America, after it was damaged by heavy rains. Discovered 40 years ago by James Adovasio, Ph.D., director of the Mercyhurst University Archaeological Institute, the Meadowcroft site provides evidence of the continent’s earliest inhabitants, dating back 16,000 years. This disproved previously held beliefs that the continent was inhabited just 12,000 years earlier.
Meadowcroft is regarded as one of the most carefully excavated sites in North America, and Adovasio and his students used many of those same excavation protocols during this operation while also introducing new state-of-the-art data collecting and archaeological recovery techniques.
So when we say our students learn by getting their hands dirty, we mean it.
GO BEYOND BOOKS. There’s only so much you can learn from textbooks and lectures. It’s our belief that a truly dynamic education comes from a combination of traditional classroom learning and “getting your hands dirty.”
How would you like to go on an archaeological dig with an internationally acclaimed anthropologist? Or conduct public opinion polling through the Mercyhurst Center for Applied Politics? Maybe you’d like to work on in-depth intelligence analysis for actual companies through the Center for Intelligence Research Analysis and Training (CIRAT). At Mercyhurst the sky’s the limit. No really, it is—we even have an on-campus observatory where you can get an up-close and personal view of the heavens.
While the knowledge you receive in the classroom is key, hands-on, real-world training you get in the field can be invaluable. That’s why most of our programs require students to earn career experience outside of the classroom. Our career services staff helps students connect with internship opportunities nationwide. These experiences not only give you a chance to put what you’ve learned to work for an actual company or organization and build your résumé, but can often lead to job offers upon graduation.
to work.get
DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS.You’ll also get the opportunity to put your knowledge to work through your senior capstone project, which is equivalent to work that entry-level professionals are actually doing. These capstone courses are built into the curriculum for every major, so no matter what field you choose you’ll receive job-related learning opportunities before you graduate.
Mercyhurst hosts an annual career fair where students can talk to professionals about jobs and internships from more than 100 local and regional businesses. This is the perfect opportunity to get your résumé in the hands of potential employers and make a great first impression.

REBECCA W. ‘14Chemistry Major, Physics Minor
After receiving both an athletic and academic scholarship from Mercyhurst, Rebecca couldn’t pass up the offer. Running was one of her biggest passions, and she loved the idea of being able to run competitively at the college level as a member of the Lakers cross country team. Little did she know that another passion—science—would help her land a highly competitive internship during her last summer before graduation.

Rebecca’s 10-week gig at Texas-based Momentive was an opportunity of a lifetime. Not only did she gain valuable field experience, but she was granted a generous salary and a stipend.
Rebecca jumped into freshman year as a chemistry major in the honors program, and began conducting experiments side-by-side with Professor Clint Jones, Ph.D. Quickly recognizing Rebecca’s natural abilities and ambition, Jones recommended her for an internship at Momentive, a global leader in the manufacture of plastic materials.

Fun fact: Jake and Jeff heard that the dance department needed more guys in the pas de deux ballet partner dancing class, so they thought, “Why not?” They did it all, from warm-ups at the barre to performing lifts. Jake liked it so much that he went on to dance in “Raw Edges,” the annual student choreography showcase.
Rowing teammates Jeff and Jake joined forces with their buddy Adam from the Student Activities Council to organize the Mercyless EnduROWthon, a 24-hour marathon of nonstop indoor rowing. These guys pulled it off while excelling in their coursework, pushing through an intense practice schedule and making the most of their senior year. With hundreds of students cheering them on and an official judge from the Guinness Book of World Records at the scene, 10 men from the lightweight men’s small team shattered the existing record on the indoor rowing machine. The EnduROWthon raised more than $5,300 for local charities.

OUR CORE VALUESWe are:
Socially mercifulGlobally responsible
Compassionately hospitableIntellectually creative
Reflectively awareAmbassadors of service.
Want to get the most out of your college experience? Give back.
At Mercyhurst, we believe service and justice opportunities are really important parts of a student’s time here. Why? Not just because it feels good to do good – but because it’s a fundamental part of our Mercy Mission that drives everything we do.
It’s why all freshmen participate in Freshman Day of Service during Welcome Week. It’s why we send volunteer groups all over the world for alternative spring break trips. It’s why we offer dozens of opportunities to experience something deeper, whatever your faith tradition may be.
Whether you want to go on a retreat; lend your talents as a music minister; or give a voice to the voiceless through volunteering or activism – you’ll find a community that challenges you and changes you at Mercyhurst.

TODAY’S EMPLOYERS WANT MORE.That seems to be the message for today’s college graduates. But what does that mean? More what?
When it’s time to turn your tassel and get a job, employers look to hire people with experience. That’s why Mercyhurst guarantees that every student, in every major, will receive hands-on, job-related experience before they graduate.
Through our Core Curriculum, you’ll learn important skills like critical thinking and problem solving that set liberal arts graduates apart. Apply those skills toward the field you love through our major-specific “capstone experiences” – internships, research projects, study abroad trips and more that let you dive in, get your hands dirty and work alongside industry pros. A capstone experience is so important to us (and to your future!) that we guarantee one to every student before graduation.
So, no matter what you’re passionate about – from archaeology to zoology; American literature to zeroes and ones – know that Mercyhurst will provide you with unparalleled access to the places and people to help you grow. That’s the “more” employers want. And it’s the “more” you should expect from a university like Mercyhurst.
GUARANTEED: INTERIOR DESIGNAs students, Interior Design majors design environments for real local businesses so they have a fully formed professional portfolio to take to job interviews once they graduate. Students have worked on community projects at Safe Harbor Behavioral Health, Country Fair Cyber Café, Serafini’s Restaurant and the sustainable design dormitory at Mercyhurst.
Each spring, the department hosts its annual exhibition of senior thesis projects – the culmination of 30 weeks of research and preparation over three terms – in the Cummings Art Gallery. And Interior Design majors have access to a 24/7 design studio and lab so they can get to work anytime inspiration strikes. With newly renovated facilities, excellent career and academic advising, and a deep alumni network at top employers all over the world, it’s no surprise the Interior Design department has a stellar job placement record. That dream architect job is closer than you think!
GET THE EXPERIENCE.
Let our students show you their experiences.mercyhurst.edu/guaranteed
ROOM TO EXPLORE.It’s OK to not know your major yet. (Really!) In fact, “undeclared” is one of the most popular options for freshmen. Why? Mercyhurst gives you tons of opportunities in your very first semester to explore your interests and hone your skills. As a liberal arts university, we require students to experience classes in a broad range of disciplines, from science to philosophy to religious studies. Plus, every freshman chooses an interdisciplinary studies seminar with three senior faculty members that introduce you to three different angles on a hot topic like sustainability studies, computer animation, presidential politics and more.
Mercyhurst is the kind of school where you can let your curiosity guide you until you figure out where you want to land. Better yet? You’ll have a whole team of professors, advisers and career counselors guiding along your journey.
INTRODUCING J-TERMWe get it: In college, you want to study abroad, land that cool internship or take a cool class that high school just didn’t offer (underwater archaeology, anyone?) At Mercyhurst, we designed our new 4-1-4 academic calendar to give you room to explore. Mercyhurst is one of few schools that offer a “J-Term,” or January term – a month-long period of study where you can zero in on one subject in a class held on campus or around the world. So dream big! Travel, research, perform, add a minor – or all of the above. The J-Term is your term to nurture your passions and discover new ones.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTSU.S.News & World Report ranks Mercyhurst University 12th (northern region) for enrolling the most international students each year. Currently, 7 percent of our student body comes from one of 44 countries, some of which include Ireland, Australia, Jamaica, Sweden, Ghana, Paraguay and Vietnam.
For more information regarding financial aid, scholarships or requirements to attend Mercyhurst University as an international student, visit mercyhurst.edu/international.
STUDY ABROADAt Mercyhurst the world is your classroom. You can choose to spend a semester at sea, study abroad or join a faculty-led expedition or service trip outside of the U.S. Students who enroll in study abroad experiences continue earning credits toward their degree. Past trips have taken students to Japan, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, The Caribbean, France and England.
THE DUNGARVAN CENTERAfter a long-standing relationship with a sister school in Dungarvan, Ireland, Mercyhurst opened a dedicated international center in 2010. This was the first time students and faculty spent an entire term studying, earning credits toward their degrees, and becoming immersed in the history and culture of Ireland. Dungarvan is also the site of several annual international forums and conferences on intelligence studies.

Deciding to study in a foreign country isn’t always easy, but for Rudy, a native of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, coming to the U.S. to earn his bachelor’s degree was a no-brainer.
As a self-proclaimed “big fish in a small pond,” this adventure seeker was looking for a place where he could pursue his passion for the arts and photography. Following in his big sister’s footsteps, Rudy decided that Mercyhurst University was his perfect fit. It didn’t hurt that he received a generous scholarship.

Many aspects of Rudy’s culture have been somewhat “Americanized” — he thinks his adjustment to college life was similar to what most freshmen experience. That included living on his own for the first time, discovering new (and might he add, delicious) cuisine, and learning to navigate a new city.
Mercyhurst’s welcoming atmosphere and friendly and open-minded students made it easy for Rudy to make friends. He even hiked through the Appalachian Mountains with a group of new friends that he otherwise would have never met.
