Designing a CEREC® crown

Dr. Mitchell S. Katz DDSFebruary 2010

What is a CEREC®?

• CEREC is an acronym for Chairside Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. • CEREC technology prevents having to wait weeks and return to the dentist

office multiple times.• During a CEREC dental restoration, an optical impression of your tooth will

be made. This high-resolution optical impression will be used to create a ceramic restoration that perfectly fits your tooth and matches the rest of your teeth.

• In about 15 minutes, the CEREC milling machine will sculpt your ceramic restoration from a block of porcelain. Once the restoration has been tested for proper fit and so that it does not interfere with your bite, it is definitively bonded to your tooth. The end result is a ceramic restoration that looks and feels just like your natural teeth.

• CEREC technology can be used to create:– Inlays– Onlays– Posterior Crowns– Anterior Crowns– Veneers

First, we create an image of your teeth and bite

Then, virtual models are created

Next, we superimpose your bite image with the desired model

Then, virtual models are put together, representing your actual bite

Models are then separated, to analyze where your teeth touch when you put your teeth

together

A border of where the crown will sit on your tooth is created

Your CEREC® crown is now designed!

The blue dots represent where the opposing teeth touch the crown

Virtual models are created showing how your new CEREC® crown fits in exactly with

your bite

Your CEREC® crown is ready to be milled! In about 13 minutes, your new crown will be ready to

confirm fit…

…and you’ll be on your way!
