You have to give CREDIT to who SAID IT!

Parts of an In-Text Citation

press his cold lips once more to my throat”

(Meyer 498).

Quotation marks to begin and end the pulled text

Pulling text/quotes from a book:

• Book – In Title, it states, “QUOTE” (AUTHOR’S LAST NAME PAGE NUMBER).

• Example:In Twilight, it states, “And he leaned down to press his cold lips once more to my throat” (Meyer 498).

Quotes/Quotations

• Pulling text/quotes means you have taken someone else’s words and put them down on your paper and are going to cite them.

• When you do this, you must use QUOTATION MARKS to show they are NOT YOUR WORDS.

• These quotation marks are NOT there to show people are talking!

• THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!

What is Dialogue?

• Conversation/Talking between characters• Exact words the person said are used• “ ” quotation marks are used• Talking inside a story – or any written text

• DIALOGUE IS PEOPLE TALKING IN A STORY!

What is Narration?

• The words that tell the story – as told by the narrator.

Lets Try It!Are the following slides examples

of Dialogue or Narration?

Turn and talk using academic discourse: Example:

I think this is an example of ___________ because _______________________.I agree/disagree with you because________________________.

What is a Quotation?

• ANY Part of a text• Exact words from a text• Could be dialogue OR narration• “ ” quotation marks are used to show the words

are not your words but the words of someone else (such as the AUTHOR of a book)

• QUOTES ARE SOMEONE ELSE’S WORDS THAT HAVE BEEN PULLED FROM SOMEWHERE!!!!

Example of a QUOTATION from The Outsiders

• “When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on

my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home” (Hinton 1).

• NO ONE is talking in this quotation. • This is narration!!• EVEN NARRATION MUST BE SURROUNDED BY

QUOTATION MARKS!!!• GIVE CREDIT TO WHO SAID IT!!!

Practice:

• Excerpt of text from The Wish Giver by Bill Brittain on page 3:

Here in Coven Tree we’re no strangers to magic.

(authors last name #).

Example of DIALOGUE + narration in The Outsiders

• The book reads:– “Hey grease,” one said in an over-friendly voice.

• IN MLA FORMAT – we need to punctuate it differently!

–“‘Hey grease,’ one said in an over-friendly

voice” (Hinton 5).

Mix of Dialogue AND Narration in Quotations

• If you quote something a character says, use double quotation marks on the outside ends of the quotation to indicate that you are quoting a portion of the text. Use single quotation marks inside the double quotation marks to indicate that someone is speaking.

“‘Thou art not my child! Thou art no Pearl of mine!’ said the mother” (Hawthorne 97).

Another Example – DIALOGUE + narration - from The Outsiders

• The book is The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton from page 7:

• IN MLA FORMAT – we need to punctuate it differently!

TASK: On your fill in notes, try to punctuate it properly in MLA format!

ANSWER:

“Darry jammed his fists in his pockets. ‘They didn’t

hurt you too bad, did they?’” (Hinton 7).

Bonus: On the back of your fill in notes:
