What is Genetics and where did it begin?

• Genetics is the study of how traits are passed from parents to offspring.

• The work began with Gregor Mendel, a priest in a central European monastery, who bred pea plants for over ten years. Mendel observed the results of traits such as height, color, and seed and pod shape

Vocabulary to know

1. Alleles Different forms of a gene

2. Gene Factors that control traits

3. Dominate allele A trait that is always expressed

4. Recessive allele A trait that is masked

5. Hybrid Offspring has 2 different traits

6. Purebred Offspring ‘s trait is the same as the parent

7. Phenotype An organism's physical appearance

8. Genotype An organism’s genetic makeup

9. Homozygous Genotypes made of the same alleles

10. Heterozygous Genotypes made of 2 different allelesENTER

Following this activity go take the quiz at the following website . Remember to use symbols to answer some of the

questions. When you are done hit control-Alt-PrtSc then open a word document and hit control “V” to paste your

work. Finally printout the work http://biology.clc.uc.edu/courses/bio105/geneprob.htm
