The Open Handset Alliance (OHA) is a

consortium/association of 84 firms to develop open

standards for mobile devices.

Member firms include the following:

Android is an operating system

designed primarily for touchscreen mobile

devices such as smartphones and tablet computers,

developed by Google in conjunction with the

Open Handset Alliance.

Initially it was developed by Android Inc, whom Google financially backed and later Google purchased the company Android Inc. in 2005.

4 Americans called Andy Rubin, Rich Miner , Chris White and Nick Sears started developing Android in 2001. They formed Android Incorporation in 2003.

But this was a failure and Google decided to buy android in 2005. Google developed the original android O/S with some changes and completed it in 2007.

Speculation about Google's intention to enter the mobile communications market continued to build through December 2006.

At Google, the team led by Rubin developed a mobile device platform, i.e. Android Operating System.

Google marketed the platform to handset makers on the promise of providing a flexible, upgradable system.

1st commercial edition Android 1.0 was launched in 2008. HTC Dream G1 was the 1st smart phone with an android O/S.

Several versions of Android have introduced since then and they were named after the name of desserts in alphabetical order.

In 2010, Google launched its Nexus series of devices - a line smart phones and tablets running the Android operating system.

The series has since been updated with newer devices, such as the Galaxy Nexus phone and Nexus 7 tablet, made by Samsung and Asus respectively.
