Message1. Aligarh Muslim University represents a unique combination of modern education and cultural ethos. AMU, therefore, imparts education with a view to inculcate professional excellence as well as finest socio cultural values among the students. The development and promotion of Art activities in AMU is a true reflection of good efforts in this direction. The revival of the Moinuddin Ahmad Art Gallery, founded by Professor Moinuddin Ahmad, about ninety years ago, has given a fillip to promoting art activities in AMU. It is the best way to pay reverence to the founder of the Art Gallery. 2. The Art Gallery plays an important role in the development and promotion of art and showcase the variety of artistic talent. AMU administration is committed to revive and develop the traditional and cultural ethos of the university and the restoration of the Art Gallery, for its original purpose, was given priority. The Art Gallery is spacious and has beautiful ambiance. It can boast to be one of the finest art galleries in India. We are sure It will be the hub of more interactive programmes at national and international level.3. The gallery has already become a centre of art activity in the campus. Many programmes, for the benefits of the students, have been organized. The Aligarh Artist Show-a painting exhibition indeed is a positive initiative. It is hoped that a large number of established and upcoming artist's will showcase their work in this exhibition. Such programmes will promote Aligarh artists, talented students of AMU and immerging artists to exhibit their works.

Message1. For the development and promotion of art, an art gallery plays a pivotal role. It provides a platform to showcase the variety of artistic talent. Moinuddin Ahmad Art Gallery was developed around 1928, by Prof. Moinuddin Ahmad, a visionary who had keen interest in art. He dedicated his life for the promotion of art particularly at Aligarh and this building is the realization of his dream. The Art Gallery with its ornate architecture, spacious capacity and beautiful ambiance will inspire young and upcoming artists to showcase their work here.2. It is indeed a matter of great satisfaction that after a gap of more than 80 years the gallery is back in its original form and is becoming an attractive and happening place at AMU campus. After the inauguration of the gallery on the occasion of Sir Syed Day, a series of programmes were planned, among which Aligarh Artist Show-a painting exhibition is a major painting exhibition which is being organized at the gallery and more than sixty established and upcoming work of budding artists will be showcased in this exhibition.3. I wish the organisers of the exhibition and the participants all the very best for this endeavour.

MessageI believe, the Moinuddin Ahmad Art Gallery, Aligarh Muslim University, designed with a cultural purpose will operate as the national gallery under the accomplished efforts of Dr. Badar Jahan (Curator) and her associates. Present art – exhibition curated by her, explores related concepts of art such as creativity and interpretation in aesthetics. I think that present set of artifacts or images with symbolic meanings will serve as a means of communication, and will bring about a particular emotion or mood, for the purpose of relaxing or entertaining the viewer.
We aspire that the MAAG will inspire those who live and work to consider the place of art in their everyday lived experiences; to stimulate an understanding and appreciation of the social, even political, aspects of art as well as the cultural and intellectual.

From the Coordinator's DeskArt is a powerful means of expression and the message art communicates has direct impact to the society. It can turn the course of society & politics and can bring the change beyond imagination. An artist is capable to address issues and areas with ease which are sensitive and beyond the preview of common man. The creative power of an artist can look beyond and ahead of physical world and its reality which moves from representational to interpretative. Whatever form, order or idea art expresses, it needs to be appreciated and encouraged for its role and contribution to the human society. The growth of art is interlinked with the growth of art galleries because it provides a platform essential for the recognition of an artist. Art galleries in India grew during independence struggle. Among the first establishments are the galleries like Lalit Kala Akadami, AIFACS, Jehangir Art Gallery and Dhoomimal Art Gallery. Today all the metropolitan cities are mushroomed with private, government and semi government art galleries which are also performing as big auction houses and taking Indian art business to international levels. The artists who are connected to these gallery get due benefits. New Delhi and Mumbai is the hub for art activities due to its metropolitan nature and a good network of art galleries. Art still holds back stage in small cities and towns in terms of growth and promotion. In this situation the emergence of an art gallery at Aligarh is a boon to the artist community. The decision to renovate the prestigious Moinuddin Ahmad Art Gallery by the Vice Chancellor Lt Gen (Retd) Zameer Uddin Shah and the execution of the project by the Pro Vice Chancellor Brig. (Retd) S. Ahmad Ali is a noble move which will be remembered in the history of AMU and will always be acknowledged by the artist community of Aligarh. Our focus is on the holistic development of the gallery, the art students of AMU and other immerging and visiting artists. Apart from developing a permanent collection we have several comprehensive plans and programmes ahead of national and international levels such as Group and Solo Shows, artist workshops, residencies, lecture and demonstration of invited artists and various interactive programme in collaboration.
Recently, we have organized Artist in Residency in collaboration with Lalit Kala Akademi and Photobaazi, an exhibition & free workshop for the students on photography on the occasion of Alumni Meet. We are now going to hold Aligarh Artist Show-a painting exhibition from 20th March to 3rd April, 2014. The purpose of this show is to promote artists, particularly the talented students of AMU and the work of more than sixty artists are being showcased in this painting exhibition.
