Chapter 2: Plates and Mountains

I. Mountain Types

A. Folded Mountains- form when two plates collide.

B. Fault-Block Mountains- these form when masses of rock move up or down along a fault.

C. Dome Mountains- form when the surface is lifted by magma, forming a bulge or dome. Erosion strips away layers of rock exposing igneous rock below.

D. Volcanoes- Common along convergent and divergent boundaries. They form when magma erupts from an opening in the earth’s surface.

NORMAL FAULT• Fault blocks pull away from each

other. However, not most common type. Like a divergent boundary.

REVERSE FAULT• Movement of blocks is toward each

other like in a convergent boundary.

STRIKE-SLIP FAULT• Movement is generally horizontal

(like a transform boundary). Very common and most famous example is San Andreas fault.

THRUST FAULT

• Associated with areas of folded surfaces and/or mountain regions. Like subduction.

• Normal faults are often associated with divergent (tensional) boundaries.

• Thrust faults are often associated with convergent (compressional) boundaries.

• Strike-slip faults are often associated with

transform (sliding) boundaries.

• What kind of faults would you expect to find in the Himalaya Mountains? Why?

• What kind of faults would you expect to find along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge? Why?

• What kind of fault is the San Andreas Fault? Is California likely to "fall off into the Pacific Ocean"? Why?
