The Bigger Picture:SA is rated 133 out of 142 countries with regard to the quality of its higher education and training system.
2011/12 WEF Global Competitiveness Report
Only 4% of the students who started the National Certificate Vocation (NCV) in 2007 at FET colleges completed and passed the 3yr qualification in 2009.SA is producing about 1/3 the required 25 000 teachers a year. More than 2/3 of teachers are older than 40. At tertiary level, half the professors will retire within the next 10 years.Nationally, schools with fully stocked science labs have dropped from 10% in 2006 to 5% in 2011.

The Bigger Picture:In 2012, SA ranked 128 out of 132 assessed countries in the Global Environmental Performance Index and is the poorest performer in sub-Saharan Africa.This sector has becoming an increasingly more popular focus area and is now the third most supported sector with 53% of companies funding environmental initiatives.
PrinciplesObjective with respect to the environment is to improve education, awareness and capacity-building of communities and schools, and in so doing mitigate risks.Mondi Forests plays the role of Facilitator – accessing resources and networks.

The Bigger PictureAccording to the 2011 General Household Survey, the number of households experiencing hunger ie. family members have had to skip meals, has decreased in the last decade from from 23,8% to 11.5%. However, South Africans still struggle with access to nutrition. Malnutrition continues to be a problem for 33% of children under 6yrs. 18% of children between 1-9yrs are stunted.

Health & WelfareThe Bigger Picture:
Rural SA (44% of the population) is critically short of adequate healthcare, served by just 19% of nurses and 12% of doctors.5% of children born in SA do not reach their 5th birthday. Over 60 babies are stillborn everyday. Two-thirds of these occur in rural areas.The Child Support Grant (CSG) reaches 10.7 million children – around 55% of the total number of children in SA. It accounts for 40% of household income in SA’s poorest areas.SA needs 55 000 social service professionals to meet welfare needs. Currently, there are only 15 000 registered social workers.
PrinciplesFacilitate the provision of comprehensive health care for workers and communitiesTo include VCT, ARTs as well as Primary Health Care eg.TB, diabetes, and to utilise government protocols/standards as the minimumOutreach programmes to strengthen community-based health education initiativesParticular focus to be given to children and OVCs.
National GVT STRATEGY - Health
Mpumalanga was allocated as one of the NHI pilot area by DOH. The objectives of the NHI are to:
• Provide improved access to quality health services for all South Africans irrespective of whether they are employed or not;
• Pool risks and funds so that equity and social solidarity will be achieved through the creation of a single fund;
• Procure services on behalf of the entire population and efficiently mobilise and control key financial resources; and
• Strengthen the under-resourced and strained public sector so as to improve health systems Performance.

To successfully implement these reforms, the NDOH is focussing on four key interventions:
• A complete transformation of healthcare service provision and delivery;
• The total overhaul of the entire healthcare system;
• The radical change of administration and management of healthcare; and
• The provision of a comprehensive package of care under-pinned by a re-engineered Primary Health Care service.
