1. Global Situation
Globally, as of 12:00 AM, 03 January 2021 there have been 82,579,768 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 1,818,849
deaths received by WHO from national authorities. USA, the world’s worst hit country, has counted 19,578,217 (231,427)
cases with 339,550 (3,761) deaths as reported to WHO; followed by India with 10,305,788 (19,079) cases; while Brazil
reported the third highest cases of 7,675,973 (56,773) and second highest deaths 194,949 (1,074) followed by India
149218 (224) at the same cut off time.

2. Bangladesh Situation
Between 8 March 2020 and 03 January 2021, according to the DGHS Press Release <https://corona.gov.bd/press-release>
there were five hundred sixteen thousand nineteen (516,019) COVID-19 confirmed by rRT-PCR, GeneXpert and Antigen
tests including seven thousand six hundred twenty-six (7,626) related deaths (CFR 1.48%). Bangladesh is the top 27th
country in the world and accounts for 0.62% of the COVID-19 disease burden in the world.

In the epidemiological week 53 (28 DEC 2020 – 03 JAN 2021), number of new cases in Bangladesh is 6,871; case per
100,000 population per week is 4.0. New death is 174; death per 100,000 per week is 0.1; Weekly CFR 2.53. Weekly new
test is 88,417; tests per 100,000 per week is 51.9; weekly test positivity is 7.8%.

3. Surveillance & Laboratory
In the reported week (epidemiological week 53), in comparison to the previous epidemiological week, the number of
new weekly COVID-19 cases decreased by 18.5% (6,871 in week 53 and 8,435 in week 52) and the number of COVID-
19 new weekly deaths increased by 1.2% (174 and 172 respectively); overall Case Fatality Ratio (CFR) increase to 1.48
which was 1.46 last week.
As of 03 January 2021, among the reported cases 26.8% cases were confirmed in people between 30 and 39 years old,
19.7% in the age group of 40 to 49, 18.2% in 20 to 29 years and 16.5% in the age group between 50 and 59 years old,
12.5% in the age group 60 and above and 6.3% in the age group below 20 years. The highest death rate (31.5%) was
reported in the age group of 60 to 69 years old, 22.4% in the age group of 70 to 79, 21.2% in 50 to 59 years, 9.4% in
the age group 80 and above, 8.7% in 40 to 40 and remaining 6.8% in the age group below 40 years. Male represents
71% and 76% of the of total reported confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths respectively.

As of 03 January 2021, 68.7% of reported cases were from Dhaka division, 12.3% from Chattogram, Khulna and
Rajshahi – 4.8%, Rangpur – 3.0%, Sylhet – 2.9%, Barishal – 2.0% and the lowest 1.5% from Mymensingh division.
While, 54.9% of the reported death were from Dhaka division, 18.7% from Chattogram, Khulna – 7.0%, Rajshahi –
5.7%, Rangpur – 4.5%, Sylhet – 3.8%, Barishal – 3.2% and the lowest 2.2% from Mymensingh division.

The highest number of weekly cases (25,481) reported in epi–week 26 (22 – 28 JUN 2020) while the highest weekly
death (314) recorded in the following week 27 (29 JUN – 05 JUL 2020). Weekly cases increased in Rajshahi division by
28.9% and Barishal by 1%; while decreased in Mymensingh division by 47.9% followed by Rangpur – 40.3%, Sylhet –
36.9%, Khulna – 28.1%, Dhaka – 20.3% and Chattogram – 10.9% than last week.
As on 03 January 2021, overall attack rate (AR) in Bangladesh is 303 per 100,000 population and 100% (64/64) of
districts with the estimated total population of 170,306,468 have reported confirmed COVID-19 cases. In the reported
week (week 53), COVID-19 weekly average AR increased by 1.3% from the previous week (303 and 299 per 100,000
population respectively).

Out of the total 516,019 COVID-19 cases registered as of 03 January 2021, 89.3% (460,598) recovered, 1.48% (7,626)
died and 9.26% (47,795) are active cases. In the epidemiological week 53, weekly average number of COVID-19 active
cases decreased by 7%, in comparison to the previous week (48,555 and 52,229 respectively); during the same time,
weekly recovery has decreased by 40.2% (8,637 and 14,434 respectively).

As of 03 January 2021, according to the DGHS Press Release 3,260,327 COVID-19 tests were conducted in Bangladesh
with the overall positivity rate of 15.83% (7.6% in last 24 hours) by 180 laboratories. Two (2) laboratories with GeneXpert
test capacity (Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Manikganj 250 Bed District Hospital) and 11 more districts with Rapid
Antigen test facilities have been added to the network COVID-19 testing facilities.
As of 03 January 2021, test per case is 6.32 which indicates the number of tests required to identify 1 case.

4. Points of Entry & Quarantine
According to DGHS, as of 03 January 2021, the current institutional quarantine capacity in the country is represented by
629 centres across the 64 districts, which can receive 31,991 persons. A total of 45,140 individuals were placed in
quarantine facilities and of them 42,166 (93.4%) have already been released. Over the same period, total of 96,656
individuals were isolated in designated health facilitates and of them 85,249 (88.2%) have been released.
5. Case Management and Infection Prevention & Control
According to DGHS, as of 03 January 2021, there are 10,495 general beds in the country of which 31.1% (3,269) in Dhaka
city and 602 ICU of which 51.5% (310) in Dhaka city dedicated for COVID-19 treatment. Presently 20.6% of the general
beds and 47.0% ICU beds are occupied all over the country.
