The Mott Community College Department of Public Safety is open 24 hours
each day, 7 days a week. As such, we are always available to assist you with
vehicle unlocks and jump starts, emergency medical
assistance, accident reports, lost and found, domestic
violence assistance, criminal investigations and so
much more!
Lieutenant Eric McElroy leads the Patrol and Adminis-
trative Operations. Lt. McElroy has a Bachelor’s De-
gree in Criminal Justice and is a graduate of the EMU
School of Staff and Command. He supervises the Pa-
trol and Administrative Operations.
Sergeant Dennie Van Alstine, First Shift—Rules and
Procedures Coordinator, is a graduate of the Law En-
forcement Exec-
utive Leadership
Institute. Sgt.
Van Alstine is
retired from the Mount Morris Township
Police Department with 20 years of ser-
vice.
Sergeant Rick Vickrey, First Shift— is our
Special Events Coordinator. Sgt. Vick-
rey holds an Associate Degree in Criminal
Justice and is a graduate of the FBI Na-
tional Academy. Rick is retired from the Flint Police Department with 23 years
of service.

Sergeant Doug Thibaut, Second
Shift—Sgt. Thibaut is a gradu-
ate of the Law Enforcement
Leadership Institute and has
patrol rifle certification. Doug
is retired from the Flint Police
Department with 27 years of
service.
Sergeant Bill Avery, Second Shift—Sgt. Avery has a Bachelor’s
Degree in Criminal Justice and is certified as a firearms instructor
and Field Training Officer Coordinator. He has 30 years of law
enforcement experience.

Sergeant Rick Besson, Third Shift—Sgt. Bes-
son earned his Associate Degree in Criminal
Justice at Mott Community College with
Highest Honors. He is the motorcycle unit
supervisor and is retired from the Flint Po-
lice Department with 22 years of service.
Sergeant Mitch Brown, Third Shift—Sgt. Brown
has an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, is a
graduate of the EMU School of Computer Foren-
sics Investigations and has a hostage negotiator
certification. Mitch retired from the Flint Police
Department after 20 years of service.
