Where is a place?
A place’s location can be described in either absolute or relative terms.

Absolute LocationGives a specific location or an address for a place.
Examples:9695 Schaefer Road. is a specific
location…It is where you will find Judson Middle School.
29°N, 98°W is a specific location…It is where you will find San Antonio, Texas, USA.

Relative LocationGives a place’s location in relation to other places.
Examples:San Antonio is in Southern Texas.San Antonio is in the Western United States.
San Antonio is in North America.San Antonio is east of New Mexico.

Every place on Earth has features that distinguish it from other places…things that make it special.
Think about San Antonio and the surrounding area, what makes it unique from other cities?

Physical Characteristics-- Naturally occurring elements within our world, they include landforms, vegetation, and climate.

Human Characteristics-- People created elements within our world, they include how people live, work, & play, customs, beliefs, religions, economic & government systems.

This theme involves how people use their environment and how the environment affects people. People

We ask the following questions:Have they changed it?What are the consequences of those changes?
How have people responded to changes in their environment?

This theme involves how people, goods, and ideas move from one place to another.
We ask the following questions:What methods of transportation is used?What helps or inhibits the movement?Why is it moving? Where is it going?

This theme involves what one place has in common with another place.
Many different criteria can be used to define regions, so the same place may be found in several different regions.

A region is a group of places with one or more common characteristics.
The United States of America can be divide into regions in many different ways, depending on what characteristics you wish to use.

As we study World Geography this year we will use
Movement, Regions, Human-Environment Interaction, Location, and Place to help us explore the world.
