Week 22 Vocabulary

close reading- digging deep into a difficult text until you can find the main idea, answer questions, and explain it.

hilarious- something that is really funny.

convinced- to persuade someone to think about or do something.

mischief- bad behavior, especially by children, that

causes trouble or damage, but no serious harm.

whirlwind- a situation that is very busy and passes by quickly.

nowadays- comparing today with the past.

simple machine – a basic tool that is used to do work.

lever- a rod balanced on a fixed point that can help lift a heavy weight with less effort.

incline plane- any slope or ramp that makes it easier to lift something.

wedge- made of two incline planes and used to push objects apart.

pulley- uses wheels and a rope to raise, lower, or move a load.

wheel and axel- used to carry loads around easily for long distances with less effort.

screw- an incline plane wrapped in a spiral used to increase force or hold objects together.

multiple meanings- words that have the same spellings, and pronunciations, but have different meanings.

bore- to make someone disinterested.
