MULTI AIR ENGINE

VISHAL KUMAR

Introduction‘Multiair’ is an electro-mechanical variable valve actuation technology which is used to control air intake in engine by solenoid valve.

Solenoid valve Multi air engine is different from other engines because it consists of solenoid valve.

A solenoid valve is an electromechanical technology used for functioning of valves.

Working of solenoid valve Valve is closed (current not flow) Valve is open (current flow)

Working of multi air engine

Lift, timing & duration of valve opening is varied by controlling solenoid valves This is done by ECU when signals are sent from the sensors

Sensors sense parameters & send signals to ECUECU contains microprocessors with associated softwareThis ECU controls the actuators to work according to requirements

AdvantagesHigher torque & power- 10 to 15 % increaseReduction in size & weightBetter fuel economy- 7 to 10 % increase

DisadvantagesOpening & closing of valves requires some power- Electromechanical- alternatorCurrent solenoids cannot run at high rpms;Hidden cost of microprocessor & software controls

Conclusion Even though some disadvantages are present, we can expect electromechanical valves to replace the conventional camshaft technology.
