A process of removing zinc from galva•nized steel comprising immersing in anaqueous electrolyte containing sodium orpotassium hydroxide. galvanically corrod•ing the zinc from the surface of the galva•nized steel in a reaction in which there is ananode and a cathode. wherein the zincserves as the anode and the material serv•ing as the cathode is principally a materialhaving a standard electrode potential inler•mediate of the standard electrode potentialsof zinc and cadmium in the electrochemicalseries, and treating the galvanized steel toaccelerate the corrosion rate of the zincfrom the galvanized steel, said treatmentcomprising increasing the number densityof corrosion sites in the galvanized steel bymechanically abrading or deforming thegalvanized steel: heating the galvanizedsteel to form an alloy of zinc on the surfaceof the galvanized steel; mixing the galva•nized steel with a material having a stan-

dard electrode potential intermediate of thestandard electrode potentials of zinc andcadmium in the electrochemical series withthe proportion of said material being atleast 5% by weight of the mixture; or caus•ing the galvanized steel to move relative toitself and to the electrolyte while immersedin the electrolyte.
