My Hope Is BuiltOn Nothing Less

THE GOSPEL IN SONG

Solid Rock

In some hymnals this song is known as Solid Rock

Its original title was: “The Immutable Basis of a Sinner’s Hope.

Immutable means “unchanging” or “unable to be changed”.

Set in Stone?

1.My hope is built on nothing lessThan Jesus' blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame,But wholly lean on Jesus' name.

Words by: Edward MoteMusic by: William B. Bradbury

On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand,All other ground is sinking sand.

2.When darkness veils His lovely face,I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale,My anchor holds within the veil.

Words by: Edward MoteMusic by: William B. Bradbury

On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand,All other ground is sinking sand.

3.His oath, His covenant, His blood,Support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way,He then is all my hope and stay.

Words by: Edward MoteMusic by: William B. Bradbury

On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand,All other ground is sinking sand.

4.When He shall come with trumpet sound,O may I then in Him be found,Dressed in His righteousness alone,Faultless to stand before the throne.

Words by: Edward MoteMusic by: William B. Bradbury

On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand,All other ground is sinking sand.

The Basis Of The Hymn

Matthew 7:24-27Parable of Two FoundationsOr of the Wise and Foolish BuildersEdward Mote, author of the hymn,

was trained as a cabinet maker.“I dare not trust the sweetest frame”

could be a reference to the frame of an earthly house and by extension to our own earthly frame.

What IS The Basis Of Our Hope?

Nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness, and His name

Jesus’ bloodHebrews 9:13-14: For if the blood of goats

and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Jesus’ Blood

1 Peter 1:18-19 – “… knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.”

Jesus’ RighteousnessRomans 3:24-25 – “…being justified as a

gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”

Jesus’ Name“And there is salvation in no one

else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” – Acts 4:12

Philippians 2:9-10 – For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed upon Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow….”

Our Anchor Within The Veil“When darkness veils His lovely face, I

rest on His unchanging grace….”

1 Peter 5:10 – “After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.”

Hebrews 6:19

“This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil…”

Hebrews 10:19-20 – “Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh….”

Three Immutable Guarantees God’s oath

Hebrews 6:17-19 – “In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil….”

What is this OATH?

God promised Abraham after the sacrifice of Isaac that “in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed….” (Gen. 22:18)

He bound that promise with an oath, “By Myself I have sworn…”

There is nothing greater than God and therefore no greater thing upon which an oath could be bound.

This is a SURE THING!

His Covenant

Hebrews 9:15 – “For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.”

Jesus died and sealed the covenant!

His Blood…Hebrews 9:18,23 – “Therefore

even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood….Therefore it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these….

He Is Our Hope And Stay

1 Peter 1:3-4 – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you….”

Assurance Before The Throne“Dressed in His righteousness alone,

faultless to stand before the throne…”Our confidence through JesusEphesians 3:12… “…in whom we

have boldness and confident access through faith in Him….”

We have confidence through faith in Jesus – nothing else.

Dressed In His RighteousnessGalatians 3:27 – “For all of you who

were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ….”

Isaiah 61:10 – “I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, My soul will exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with garland, and as a bride adorns herself with jewels.”

Faultless to stand…1 Corinthians 6:9-11 – “…Do not be

deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.”
