SENIORS INFORMATION & RESOURCES
When seeking out senior-specific information and firesources on matters such as health, special inter-
est groups or local fitness opportunities, it can be hard tofiknow where to begin.
The supplement you hold in your hands is a good place to start but there are a few spots in Nanaimo worth consider-ing as places to save a lot of time while fi nding out morefiabout opportunities and services available locally.
Seniors centres in Nanoose Bay and Nanaimo are a logicalplace to begin, with friendly people always on hand to of-fer any assistance or advice they can and many tempting opportunities for education and recreation available right there.
Some numbers to jot down as contacts of interest might include the Paradise Island Seniors Society at 250-754-9566 and the Harbour City Seniors at 250-755-7501 – bothare indispensable resources for anyone looking to stay active in an atmosphere that promotes camaraderie and new friendships.
Naturally an assortment of health issues can arise in age and the provincial government’s Health and Seniors Infor-mation Line is available during regular business hours tohelp at www.gobv.bc.ca/health or by calling 1-800-465-4911.
Just a taste of places to get informed. Happy hunting! Seniors centres are a great starting place for information.

The beauty of Nanaimo has been attracting people for
generations and in recent de-cades it has become a favourite retirement destination for itsgood weather, scenery and activelifestyle.
Though vacancy rates are histori-cally low, the region off ers a varietyffffof housing options for the area’s large senior population ranging from single family developments to all levels of assisted living.
The area boasts a healthy development industry buildingcondos and single family homes that may be just a little morephysically accessible than in other regions, up to variousforms of adult only facilities, senior specific housing and as-fisisted living options.
Many seniors live in single family houses, but significant finumbers live in condos, apartments, mobile homes and other types of housing.
The region also has an increasing number of assisted living options for those who need diff erent levels of long-term careffffbut are generally able to get around on their own.
Assisted living includes a private, lockable, unfurnished unit
in a building with common din-ing and socializing spaces andincludes two meals a day, light weekly housekeeping, laundering of linens, social and recreationalopportunities and a 24-hour emer-gency system. The cost is based on income with residents paying 70per cent of their monthly after-taxincome, up to a maximum.
If there is permanent decline insomeone’s health, a significant fiincrease in care needs, or an in-
ability to make decisions on their own, people may movefrom assisted living to a higher level of care.
Many of the area’s larger, newer senior living facilities includea range from independent living with virtually no help up to residential care options that provide 24-hour professionalcare and supervision for people with complex health needs. Staff administers medications and assist residents with dailyffactivities such as eating, bathing and dressing.
There is also a variety of home care help options and special-
ized housing for people with dementia or people living in the
community that require specialised services such as physi-
cally accessible or drug and alcohol free.

SENIORS SERVICES & ORGANIZATIONS
With populations in Nanaimo that include a large percentage of seniors, it’s only naturalthat the community as a whole has tailoredmuch of its services and organizations around assisting our elders with their everyday needs.
Nanaimo as a region provides plenty for
seniors, as do private care facilities, local businesses and volunteer-based organizations- from social advocacy to music and theatre groups.
Within this guide, there are a multitude of resources to choose from.
The Nanaimo Telephone Visiting Soci-
ety started more than 30 years ago with
the discovery of a diary next to a dead
woman’s body.
The diary contained more than 39 days
worth of entries, all exactly the same –
‘No one called or visited me today.’
The elderly woman’s story was reported
in a Winnipeg newspaper and came to
the attention of Sister Roseline Dunn,
who formed a Phone a Friend Society to
lessen the loneliness seniors feel.
A few years later, Dunn moved to
Nanaimo and, noticing the large elderly
population, felt the same sort of organi-
zation was needed here.
She formed the Nanaimo Telephone
Visiting Ministry Society, which later
became the Nanaimo Telephone Visiting
Society.
Christine McCubbin said there are
seniors who are lonely in Nanaimo who
just need someone to connect with. They
just need to know that people care.

By Wendy Pratt, Executive Director,Nanaimo Community Hospice
Some startling statistics on theissues surrounding caregiving in Canada were recently highlighted inan online report from the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) and in a fact sheet releasedby the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA).
It is estimated that there are presently over five million caregivers in Canada and fiapproximately 1 million of these are caregiving for a loved onein the last months or year of their life. By 2031 that number of older adults requiring formal or informal assistance will haveincreased by 200 per cent.
In a recent study sited by CARP, 26 per cent of Canadians reported they had cared for a family member or close friendwith a serious health problem in the last 12 months. Of these,22 per cent took upwards of one month off work and 41 per ff
cent used personal savings. As aresult, 8 in 10 reported suff ering ffffemotional diffi culties, 7 out of 10 ffireported they needed respite, 54 per cent reported financial diffifi culties, ffiand 50 per cent reported weaker physical health.
Embracing an aging-at-home strategy is cost effectiveffffand would preserve the dignityand independence of older adults and minimize the need for institutionalization and
unnecessary ER visits, however this hinges on improved health care delivery and support for family caregivers.
Those providing care and support at Nanaimo Community Hospice understand the growing dilemma of caregivers as thebaby boomers and their parents continue to age. Hospice hasmany programs that support caregivers.
Call 250-758-8857 for more information on free programs offered through Hospice.ffff
