2nd Grade: ELA Curriculum Guide 1st Nine Weeks
Weeks 1-3 READING FOR LITERATURE & INFORMATIONAL TEXT
TN State Standards Comments Suggested Resources
Power Standards: RL 2.5 Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.
First Grade Standard that was covered in previous school year: RL 1.5 Explain major differences between books that tell stories and books that give information, drawing a wide reading of range of text types. This standard will be used in conjunction with the “Get-to-know-you” kinds of activities that teachers typically do the first few weeks of school. This is a great time to use your team building books and stories that are typically used for Back to School. The focus in the first three weeks are the story structure of these books. You may want to break it up by weeks. Focus on character and setting the first week, Beginning/Middle/End the second week and tying it all together the third week. Fiction books will be your focus in this section. As you’re doing activities for that standard, also practice asking and answering questions with the 5Ws and an H.
