JANUARY, 2020
From the Pen of the Pastor
I never was a golfer, but I have golfed. I tried it mostly out of curiosity, after one by one my old fishing
buddies stopped fishing and took up the sport. The fact is, they became obsessed with it. They’d spend their
lunch time making chip shots in the vacant fields near the office and after work they’d rather go to the driv-
ing range than go fishing; even when the blues were running. It just didn’t make sense to me. I couldn’t
help but wonder what could possibly be so fascinating about hitting a little white ball into a small cup.
But, as they say, one shouldn’t knock something unless they’ve tried it, so I did. And to my surprise I found
golf challenging, but rewarding; frustrating, but satisfying; an utter waste of time but also something joy-
fully addictive. But you know what I liked most about it? The Mulligan’s.
For you who may not know, a Mulligan in golf is a “do-over”—a shot that the golfer gets to replay. A free-
bee if you will. The practice is pretty well known. I’ve been told people have been taking Mulligan’s since
at least the 1930s. Now, no one seems to know exactly where the term or the practice originated...but most surmise it was
named after someone named Mulligan. Although no one knows for sure, there are a few stories floating around about the first “do-over.” The
USGA Museum mentions that there was a man by the name of David Mulligan who frequented St. Lambert
Country Club in Montreal, Canada who, during the 1920s. let go a shot off the tee one day he wasn’t happy
with. So he re-teed, and hit it over again. According to the story, he called it a "correction shot," but his
golfing buddies thought a better name for it was needed and so they dubbed it a "mulligan." Another story often cited by the USGA is that of a man named John "Buddy" Mulligan, who was known
for replaying poor shots at Essex Fells Country Club in N.J. in the 1930s. As with David Mulligan in Can-
ada, Buddy Mulligan's golf partners reportedly named the “do-over” shot after him.

continued from page 1 What does all this have to do with my New Year’s Newsletter? Everything...and Nothing. Many of us amidst all
the talk of New Year’s Resolutions, just want to take a couple Mulligan’s; even if technically or legally there is
no such thing. Why do we want a “do-over?” We want a “do-over” because we did ‘something’ poorly last year...maybe over
and over again. Am I overweight? Yes. I want to try again to resist eating all those things I shouldn’t have eaten
last year. Am I still smoking despite all of my friends and relatives with emphysema and lung cancer warning me
to stop? Yes, I want to choose another bad habit, one that won’t make we wheeze and shorten my life. Are you
saving just a little and spending way too much? Yes, you want to do that over...you want to shed your gas guz-
zling sports car in favor of an economical one and bank the difference. Most of all, we want a different me...a me that doesn’t sin as badly or as much, a me that doesn’t succumb to as
many temptations, a me that has to try harder to bring regrets to mind. How can we get what amounts to a Mulligan this coming New Year? How can we not waste the anticipation and
existential expectation the New Year brings and make real change and better choices a reality in our life? We can
do so when we make our only New Year’s resolution our turning to the only One who can make real, lasting and
meaningful change possible...to the only One who can make all things new - Jesus Christ the Lord. The object of a New Year should not be just a new calendar and a vague wish not to make the same mistakes and
blunders we made last year...it should be for a spiritual renewal and all which that entails. Unless we start anew,
motivated and strengthened by the power of the Holy Spirit, we will certainly do nothing any better or more ef-
fective. As the Bible says, “Unless a man be born again, he shall by no means enter into the Kingdom of
Heaven." So this New Year I suggest we all take inventory and in honest reflection and self-assessment, admit our failures
to the One who will forgive them and help us be better people, wiser people and people less prone to error. This
New Year, let us devote our lives more to God and seek His help in addressing those things we now say we want
to change but lack the strength to. Only He can open our eyes to the fact that our ‘wants,’ though alluring, may be
self-destructive and that we’d be better off focusing on one another’s needs instead. Let’s be honest, the efficacy of popular New Year's Resolutions is poor. They may reflect our deep longings and
give us opportunities to exercise our human freedom and choose a better way of life; but, our fallen nature is far
too weak to overcome the devil’s temptations. Quite simply, we need God. He can be found where He says He will be found...in His Word and Sacraments. He will be found in Church,
where He gives His gifts of forgiveness, real life and salvation. Join me there ...and together let us make 2020 a
year of positive growth and eternal blessing. Happy New Year!!!
Pastor Mike

SOUP FUNDRAISER
ST. PAUL PRESCHOOL We have had an awesome month learning all about the meaning of Christmas. We have talked about giving from
ourselves to others. We enjoyed decorating the classroom for Christmas.
Pastor came and told us all about the angel coming to Mary to give her the news of baby Jesus.
Mrs. Sarah came and we learned about the music from the Nutcracker. About fast and slow and loud and soft
music and enjoyed dancing to it.
Thank you all for your continued support of our program, I could not do it without so many wonderful people.
Merry Christmas!
FIRST PRESCHOOL The preschoolers had a busy month getting ready for Christmas. Our Bible stories and songs focused on the birth
of Jesus. We made fun Christmas crafts too! We made Christmas trees, candles, wise men, and baby Jesus in the
manger. We had our Christmas program at the church for our families and sang at the United Bank Open House. We had
great attendance at both events. The kids did an awesome job sharing the message of Christmas. We are look-
ing forward to our Christmas parties. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Preschool!
FIRST LWML
Christmas Time is here!! First Lutheran LWML celebrated with a luncheon at the Apostolic
Christian dining room, Dec 7, 2019 with nine members present. President Martha Pearson
asked the meal blessing. Brenda Meyer had two Mustard Seed messages; "The Holy Family" and "Birth of our Savior”.
Lorene Strahm read history about the first Christmas tree and about Christmas cookies. Karen Aeschliman passed out shopping list pads to all. Brenda Meyer gave each a Mustard Seed
pamphlet, and Lorene gave a Mug rug for everyone present. Thank you, ladies! We were very happy that Gerrianne, Rosemary and LaVonne were able to have fellowship with us! May all have a Blessed Christmas. Our next meeting will be March 4, 2020. Ruth Swart, Secretary
ZION LWML
The regular meeting of the Zion Lutheran LWML was held Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at 7:00
p.m. President Lela Middendorf called the meeting to order with 4 members present. Lela opened
the meeting with devotions entitled “Sweet Season”. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved, and the treasurer's report was given. An acknowledgement from Orphan Grain Train was received for the quilts that we sent to them and
they indicated that the quilts will probably go to Latvia. A thank you note was also received from
Traci Rahe for the support we provide for her mission trips. Traci just returned from a trip to India. A
Christmas card was received from the Concordia Seminary Food Bank. Ten goodie bags were assembled for our homebound members. We were asked to provide cookies
for the LYF Christmas carolers coming to Hiawatha on Sunday, December 15. Discussion followed on future meetings of LWML. A motion was made by Diane Davis and sec-
onded by Barb Mueller that we meet every other month starting in February, 2020. The motion car-
ried. The chancel workers for January are, Sharon Lowe, Barbara Mueller, Michelle Moreno and Lela
Middendorf. The greeters for January 5th and 12th are Greg and Diane Davis; and for January 19th and
26th are Cindy and Richard Schilling. The meeting closed with a devotion entitled “Joy of Christmas”.

ST. PAUL Our December meeting held on December 1, 2019 was held at St. Paul Lutheran Church at 2 pm. Sixteen
ladies were present. Nancy Manche had the program. She prepared several Christmas trivia games. The
games had us all humming carols and Christmas music. Becky and Sadie Meyer and Nancy Manche
were the hostesses. They served a banquet of delicious finger foods. Cindy Manche, Secretary
The St. Paul Dorcas Society held their November 6th meeting at 7pm at the church. President Nancy
Manche called the meeting to order. Kim Priest gave the devotion. She entitled it the “Farmer’s Wife”
and or “Strength of a Praying Woman.” We had a group discussion on how we handle life issues and still
keep our focus on what matters most. God is our ever present help and He gives us the firm 4-wheel
drive that will pull us to a solid place. We are to trust in Jesus and pray for everything at anytime. Cindy Manche read the minutes of the previous meeting. The minutes were approved as read. She shared
the correspondence. There were newsletters from the Topeka Rescue Mission, Lutheran Bible Transla-
tor, and a thank you from Immanuel, Netawaka, who hosted the LWML NE Zone Gathering. Kathy
Heiniger also shared the LWML newsletter, “Gracious Giver.” Rosalie Mellenbruch gave the treasurer’s report. The report was accepted as given. Nancy thanked eve-
ryone for helping at the LWML Sunday. Kathy Heiniger and Cindy Manche reported on the LWML NE
Zone Fall Gathering. Pastor Kilgo gave the Bible Study on the Book of Ruth. Sarah Kleopfer, NE Zone
delegate, gave her talk on the LWML convention held in Mobile, Alabama. Laura Hunter, VP of Caring
Service gave the LWML Kansas District President’s report. The LWML Kansas District convention will
be held in Topeka on April 17-19, 2020. Kathy and Cindy also spoke of the Christian Life Retreat held
on Nov.1-2, in Salina. Heidi Goehmann wrote the Bible Study from Song of Songs called “Altogether
Beautiful.” In unfinished business, Kathy gave another update on the roster liner. Kim Priest moved to buy an 18 qt.
roster. It was seconded and the motion carried. In new business, we discussed getting a Bible Study for each meeting. Advent decorating will be Nov.
30th. Rosalie Mellenbruch asked if we would like to narrow our charity list or do a rotation. Currently
we have 9 charities we give to from our Christmas stockings. Kim Priest moved to have a rotation of
charities. We would alphabetize the charities and rotate three charities at a time. The motion was sec-
onded and the motion carried. Our next meeting is Dec. 1st at the church. We are encouraged to invite guests to our Christmas meeting.
Also bring our Christmas stockings to support our charities. We closed with the Lord’s Prayer. Kathy Heiniger served homemade pie for refreshments. Cindy Manche, Secretary
