Tutor Details 1501 Peta McMillan: Peta is a well known member of the Whakatane Embroiderers’ Guild who has travelled around New Zealand teaching embroidery for over twenty years. She has focused on unusual techniques, reviving some and bringing them into our modern world. Peta has had many articles published in embroidery magazines, and is the author of books and folders on Snutki and Kalocsa embroidery. Her main focus and love is in the traditional techniques.
1502 Alison Wilson: I am passionate about colour and stitching, and love to share my enthusiasm. I love playing with texture and colour, and find canvas work is ideal for experimenting in these areas. I completed City and Guilds Part 1 in design and embroidery, as well as a NZ Certificate in Craft Competency in Machine Embroidery. I have taught throughout NZ and at ANZEG Conferences, as well as at Guilds.
1503 Jeanette Trotman: Jeanette is interested in colour and design. She teaches at Otago Guild and at Wanaka Embroidery School. Jeanette has judged both at conference and locally and gained level three City and Guilds Diploma in embroidery and design. Many of her exhibition pieces involve dyeing, printing and layering, which are then integrated by surface stitching.
1504 Sarah Hooker: Many years retailing embroidery and patchwork supplies in Wellington gave me the opportunity to explore all fields of contemporary and traditional hand and machine stitching. After selling the business in 2006, I decided my love was teaching surface stitching and canvas work with an emphasis on students creating their own original work by creatively using the simplest stitches.
1505 Kay Hawker: Kay has a relaxed and enjoyable teaching style. Canvas work is one of her favourites and she loves the use of colour. Kay has taught at the Wanaka and Westport Schools, has been a guild member since 1987 of three guilds and holds a certificate in Canvas work.
1506 Patricia Davis: Patricia is classically trained in all the traditional embroidery techniques and has a background in design work, architecture, landscape design, pottery design, interior work, drawing and textile conservation. Patricia has extensive experience with teaching for ANZEG and in Australia. Her work has been frequently exhibited and she has published articles, reviews and critiques in Australian magazines.
1507 Helen Packer: A retired school teacher, having taught in both primary and secondary schools. Have taught embroidery in secondary schools, embroidery guild, and for many years at the Wanaka Embroidery weekend, and at several classes at patchwork/ embroidery shops. For 15 years I designed, and trained to do, the embroidery for Tamahine Knitwear Company. Attended night classes for 2 years at Dunedin Technical School, and 1 year at Glasgow school of art.
1508 Anne Bell: Ann has worked with all forms of fibre from a very early age, knitting, crocheting, tatting, pattern making and dressmaking and later learning spinning weaving and dyeing. Over the last few years Ann has been able to take time to explore more creative directions incorporating paper and paints, using all the skills learned in the past and uses all these skills to teach others. Anne’s work has been widely exhibited in Australia and New Zealand and she has taught bookbinding throughout NZ.
1509 Gaynor Chronican: Gaynor is a member of the Otago Embroiderers Guild (Dunedin) and has been teaching embroidery techniques in the Otago region and further afield over the past decade. Gaynor has gained considerable experience attending master classes with a range of international embroiderers. Whilst she enjoys all types of embroidery, raised work is a particular favourite.

1501: Peta McMillian – Kalocsa Embroidery Lace and Flowers
Kalocsa is a colourful Hungarian technique, now worked on computerised sewing machines for the tourist market with only the satin stitch part done by hand.
In this class you will learn how to make the lace by hand and execute good satin stitch.
As many colours are used, a kit will be provided to save students having to buy a ball of each colour and only using a small amount. No pre-‐‑class work necessary.
This class will suit intermediate to advanced embroiderers. Kit cost: $12 includes notes, threads, fabric, crewel needles and gimp.
1502: Alison Wilson – Canvas Work Needlepoint bands
The finished embroidered bands could be inserted into a cushion or bag, or a box top, or used as a sampler.
We will try some colour experimenting – as Constance Howard said, “let’s see what some DMC 995 will do!”
I will provide two sets of stitches, which can be used in two separate cushions, or combined into one.
Suitable for all levels of experience. Notes: $4.50

1503: Jeanette Trotman – Dorset Buttons “I do Buttony"
In this class we will make three different types of Dorset ring buttons: the Crosswheel, the Basket, and the Flower buttons. We start by making the Crosswheel button, learning casting, slicking, laying and rounding.
When the practice buttons are completed, participants can choose to make a pair of cuff links, a scissor keep, or continue making variations of the designs for a small wall hanging.
Each button is made on a 2.5cm brass curtain ring. These are imported from Shaftesbury in Dorset, England.
Some experience of embroidery would be useful. The cost will be $5.00 for five rings.
1504: Sarah Hooker – Creative Stitching Cottage Garden Doorstop
A free-‐‑style cottage garden is started with an emphasis on using easy embroidery stitches creatively.
This is a fun class for beginners who would like to learn a number of stitches and more advanced students will enjoy working without a pattern.
Create a practical doorstop for the home. Students will be introduced to basic embroidery stitches that are mixed to create a pretty, cottage garden effect.
The doorstop construction process will be demonstrated and students will leave the class with the confidence to complete the work at home. Students may prefer to use this technique to start a bag, cushion or wall hanging.
Suitable for all levels. Notes with photos, full stitching and construction instructions provided at no charge.

1505: Kay Hawker – Canvas Work Geometric Symmetry
This is a charted design that includes the use of 'ʹJean Hilton'ʹs stitches’, which can be utilised by a beginner through to a more experienced embroiderer. One quarter of the design will be taught and all information will be in the instruction
booklet. Although this is a charted design, there will be choices with different arrangements of the elements and borders. The photo shows one choice.
The sample piece is achieved by spray painting gold onto 18 count canvas and the threads used are a rayon and metallic with one strand being used throughout. The design is 26cm long and 21.5cm wide and it can be framed, used for a box top, or a book cover. There will also be an opportunity to learn how to colour the canvas to match a multi-‐‑coloured thread. Suitable for all levels of experience. Instruction booklet: $10.00
1506: Patricia Davis – Art Needlework Leek Embroidery from Staffordshire
Developed in 1860 by embroiderers and artists in the village of Leek, as a reaction against Berlin wool work coloured with chemical dyes and other imported goods.
Workshop participants can choose from several designs, the photo shows an Arts & Crafts style sample and a floral sample. There will be other designs available, some in the church or civic style.
This embroidery uses a selection of colours of stranded cotton thread worked on a closely woven background, outlined in gold thread, typically in stylised floral motifs.
The small floral spray makes a picture or the centre of a cushion. The more heraldic pattern makes a sumptuous cushion. Suitable for all levels; no charge for notes.

1507: Helen Packer – Embroidery on Silk Medieval Miniatures
Stitch a miniature scene using figures from a variety of medieval illustrations. Students will choose their own motifs from supplied ideas for figures, backgrounds, plants and animals that often appear in medieval tapestries. Works are carried out on silk and use a single strand of DMC stranded cotton.
The stitches in themselves are very basic, but it is more a matter of technique and learning different methods. Just because the stitching is very fine it doesn'ʹt mean it is very difficult. The stitched areas in the pictured samples are approx. 10 x 7cm.
Suitable for intermediate to advanced stitchers; good eyesight or magnifying glasses may help.
Kit provided with the silk fabric, backing, threads in medieval colours, a variety of designs and ideas -‐‑ $25
1508: Anne Bell – Concertina Books Fun with the Concertinas
Spend the weekend making a number of samples showing the use of the concertina.
Potential versions are a four layered star concertina, a gallery, a dos a dos, a tunnel book and others that can display samples or photos.
Sample books are A6 but the methods can be used to make all sizes of books.
Suitable for all levels of experience. Kit cost: $8.00

1509: Gaynor Chronican – Tassels Fun with Tassels
This will be a fun class where you will be creating your own tassel, based around wooden forms. These are the type used as curtain tiebacks, around 20cm long.
Over the two days we will cover the wooden shapes, make our own cords, skirt and various types of embellishments to decorate your tassel.
Your tassel will be unique as you will choose and make your own decoration. I will also include more simple tassels suitable for embellishing your future embroidery projects.
The class is suitable to all levels of embroidery experience and skill and there is no pre-‐‑class preparation required.
There will be a selection of wooden forms available for purchase ($7.50-‐‑$12.00) or participants are very welcome to bring their own.
Suitable for intermediate and above.
