1

The beginning of an exceptional life

• Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Qunu, on 18th July 1918.

• He was educated and he went to Wesleyan College . He obtained his diploma.

His engagement

• In 1942 he joined the ANC (African National Congress) to fight against the inequalities between whites and blacks.

• Then, he became the leader of this movement.

Instauration of Apartheid

• The victory of the National Party, which won the 1948 all-white elections, led to the instauration of a new policy : the apartheid.

This new policy consisted in separating black people and white people.

Mandela changes his strategy• But, in 1960, and after the Sharpeville massacre of

63 black South Africans, the government banned the ANC.

• This led Mandela to abandon his non violent strategy and to create the « Umkhonto we Sizwe » (translated "Spear of the Nation"), a network promoting armed action

Imprisonment

• Mandela was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964. He was charged with sabotage, treason and plotting.

• During his years in prison, Mandela’s reputation grew steadly. And he consistently refused to compromise his political position to obtain his freedom.

Mandela recovers freedom

• In 1989, president De Klerk met Mandela and, one year later, in 1990, Mandela was released after 27 years in prison.

• De Klerk allowed the ANC.

Mandela’s efforts congratulated

• In 1993, Mandela and De Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Mandela president

• Then, the ANC won the first non-racial elections in 1994, and Mandela became the first black president of South Africa. He was president until 1999.

His today engagement

• He got married three times. He lost one of his sons, infected by AIDS.

• Today, he dedicates himself to the fight against AIDS.

Mandela, symbol of freedom

• Nelson Mandela is an influent personality, especially in Africa.

• He remains a symbol of freedom around the world.
