The second phase of our Plugged In
Discipleship emphasis - Being Grounded is well
underway. This is not a “program.” It is a very
organic effort that will work to transform the
culture of SCPC slowly over the years allowing
for many different ways for folks to plug in and
get grounded spiritually for the sake of the
mission God has given us. We are getting
better and better all the time at getting folks
plugged in—connected. But we also need to
work with the help of the Spirit of God to
nurture going deeper in faith and bringing
others along with us.
Even though we don’t understand all the
mechanisms of how God works, God is working
in the world all around us every moment of
every day. In regard to our participating with
God in this kingdom work Rowan Williams in
Tokens of Trust says,
“We can say that there are some things we can
think, say or do that seem to give God that
extra (freedom to maneuver) in our universe…
we are called to pray, to trust and to live with
integrity before God (to live ‘holy’ lives) in such
a way to give God that extra (freedom to
maneuver) in our universe… we are called to
pray, to trust and to live with integrity before
God (to live ‘holy’ lives) in such a way as to
leave the door open, to let things come
together so that love (the love of God) can
come through.”
To this end, this past spring we had our first
“boot camp” sort of experience called
“Groundings” where we learned to use the
practices of discipleship in the very real context
of our everyday lives. We were opened up to
understanding the New Testament, particularly
the Jesus narratives, as a textbook for
discipleship. We are learning to practice
discipleship in such a way that others are
brought along. This is the heart of our
mission—to proclaim the kingdom of God—the
rule and reign of Christ—through living it out in
everyday life. This “Groundings” experience
will help us develop the ability to see where
God is at work all around us—his kingdom at
work—and to partner with God by the power
of the Spirit and the presence of Christ in and
through our own lives.
Eleven people completed this experience and
are ready to pass it on. Some will continue to
do what they have been doing but with
renewed commitment. Others will find new
ways of being in the world for the sake of the
kingdom. Some will lead a new boot camp
experience, some will partner with one or two
other people to experience “Groundings.” We
want to develop a culture of discipleship and
are praying for the Spirit of God to accomplish
this among us through “Groundings.” Be
watching the Connection, and inquire at the
Welcome Cart and in the Welcome Lounge
about opportunities this fall to join in the
experience of Being Grounded.
God is on the move. Don’t miss out on being a
part of what he is doing. Get plugged in! Be
grounded! It’s what we were created to be!

SUNDAY, AUGUST 3
PLEASE BRING A BAG FILLED WITH FOOD TO THE MISSION CART
ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 3, FOR OUR MONTHLY FAM FOOD DRIVE.
The beach party for "our" 900 1CEB Marines
and family members was a big success. Thanks
to all who participated in making this a great
day for the Marines and their families.
Peter Carissimo and his crew of servers and
helpers cooked and served a delicious lunch of BBQ ribs and chicken along with hotdogs and hamburgers. There
were 20 members of SCPC helping to make this a memorable day for the Marines.
At 1130 sharp, 2 WWII aircraft from San Diego flew over and buzzed the party with a low pass, rocking their wings
showing their thanks for the battalion's service to our country and their recent successful deployment in
Afghanistan.
The Marines had a great time dunking their Commanding Officer Lt Col Smith and his senior enlisted men in the
dunk tank. Soul Surfing School, a Christian surf school from Laguna Beach, volunteered their surfboards and
instructors giving surf lessons to the marines and their kids. We were blessed with warm sunshine and warm ocean
water. It was a beautiful day for all.
Thanks again for supporting "OUR" Marines and family members of 1CEB. YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Hey Ladies, put September 13 on your calendar. It is Jane Wayne Day at the
1CEB Battalion. You get to play Marine for a day. You are all invited, age is not
an obstacle, to put on a helmet, a flack jacket, and go out in the field with the
Marines hunting for IEDs, driving their equipment, and firing an M-4 rifle at the
firing range. You will also get to eat a delicious MRE lunch, just like the Marines
do when deployed in the battle zone. Fun, Fun!!!

Y-MALAWI TEAM UPDATE
Our Y-Malawi team arrived safely in Lilongwe on Sunday afternoon, July 27 after
30+ hours of traveling. They were able to enjoy dinner at a restaurant in Lilongwe
before heading to bed.
On Monday, they shopped for all their food in Lilongwe, the capitol city, before
driving to Nkhoma village.
They spent Tuesday with World Vision (WV). Pat Marvin wrote, “It was
a wonderful experience meeting the kids, seeing a cabbage garden
(amazing!) and learning how much one cow can impact the life of a
village. Everyone was inspired, humbled and totally thankful to the WV
staff for a great day.”
On Wednesday the team will be meeting with the CCAP (Church of
Central Africa Presbyterian) Youth Department. They are not sure of the
plan, but will be led by our partner and friend Kennedy Chabwera. In
the afternoon they hope to have a tour of the Nkhoma Hospital.
Please keep the team in your prayers as they serve the Lord together for the next two weeks. Updates for the team will be
on the SCPC Facebook page and the team blog post at: http://2014scpcymalawi.blogspot.com.
