Astronomer Sir William Herscheldiscovered the existence of infraredradiation by trying to measure the heatof the separate colors of the rainbowspectrum cast on a table in a darkenedroom. He found the highest temperatureto fall beyond the red end, which hereported to the Royal Society as DarkHeat in 1800.

HOMEINSPECTORCAMERAS
How can a Home Inspector use IR?
Find Wet Walls, Ceilings, Carpets etc.
Document Working Appliances.
Tell whether the walls “appear” to beinsulated or not.
Find “HOT” electrical circuits.
Find infestations, Ants, Termites, Bees &other vermin.

4 Important facts about infrared
1. Helps you see “The Big Picture” of the building
2. Infrared Cameras are not X-Ray machines!
3. Infrared cameras only show surface temperature
patterns
4. Meaningful results take time to understand
Find the “WET”
Specific conditions are needed to find wetbuilding materials. But when thoseconditions are met. WOW!

Document Appliance Conditions
Properly operating appliances will exhibitthermal differences that are easily detectedwith an infrared camera. All you need is alittle training to understand the conditionsneeded.

Are the walls insulated?
Energy Audits have become a full time jobfor some people and the use of thermalimaging systems is one of the leading toolsused.
What can you see?

IR inspectors need to be aware of the typeof image they should or might expect to see
Different anomalies appear as differentimage patterns
Takes time to understand what the imageris showing you
With no training you will make mistakes!
