Firstofall,introduceyourselftoyourneighbours;makesureyouknowwhotheyareandthattheyknowwhoyouare.Knowingyourneighbourscanhavemanybenefits;theyknowtheareaandsocaninformyouonrubbishandrecyclingcollections,tipsonlocalgemssuchasrestaurantsandshops,andmayalsobeablekeepaneyeonyourproperty,particularlyduringtheholidays.Makingyourselfknowntoyourneighboursearlyonwillhelptocreateapositivelastingimpression.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT
NOISENoise isoftenthebiggestcauseofcomplaint fromresidentswho livenearstudents,anditisimportantthatweallthinkabouthowourbehaviourwillaffectourneighbours.
Pleasebeawareofthosearoundyouandensurethatyourneighbourscanenjoytheirhomeandgardenswithoutdisturbance.Notallofyourneighbourswillbestudents,youmaylivenextdoortoanolderperson,ortheymayhaveyoungchildrenorworknightshifts.Mostpeoplewillhavetobeupearlyforworkandwillnotappreciatehearingaheavybass-linepumpingoutatallhoursofthedayandnight!
Whenintroducingyourselftoyourneighboursmakesurethattheyknowtheycancometoyouiftheyarebeingdisturbedbythenoisefromyourhouse.Youcouldgivethemamobilenumberforinstance,sotheycantextyouifthenoiseiskeepingthemawakeatnight.
Whenyouaresettingoutyourroom,thinkaboutwhereyouareputtingyourTVorstereoandhowthismightaffectyourneighbours.Trytokeepthemawayfromadjoiningwalls,asthenoisecouldbedisturbing.
Trytokeepnoisetoaminimumbetween11pmand7amandbeconsideratewhenyouarereturninghomefromanightout.Thelastthingyourneighbourswanttohearisloudvoicesorcardoorsslammingoutsidethefrontdoorat3am!

Every now and then you might wantto have a party. Please be aware that ifyour party impacts negatively on thecommunityaroundyou,youmayreceiveacomplainttothecouncil,yourlandlord,ortothecuniversity.Pleasecheckthetermsofyourtenancyagreementastheremaybeaclausewhichstatesyouarebreakingthe terms of your contract by having aparty.
Beforetheparty,tellyourneighbourswhenyou are planning to have one and whattimeyouexpectittofinish.Remembertogivethemplentyofnotice.Thisdoesnotmean it isokaytomakeexcessivenoise,but ensures your neighbours are awarethatyoumayhavemorepeoplethanusual
PARTIESturningup.During the party be conscious of noiselevelsandinparticularofanyheavybass.Askgueststoleavequietly,ensuringtheydonotleaveanymessbehindthem.Haveapropercleanupattheendofthenight-rememberyouareresponsibleforanymesscreatedbyyourguests,sopleasepickupanybrokenbottles,cigarettebuttsetc...
If someone asks you to turn the musicdown, please respect their request. Bearin mind that if environmental healthare called they have the right to seizeequipmentfromyourproperty.
Volunteeringcanbeagreatwayofgettingtoknowyourneighbourhoodbetter,makingnewfriendsandcreatingapositiveimpactonyourcommunity.Therearemanydifferentwaysofgettinginvolved,fromaplacementatalocalgroup,toorganisingacleanupinyourstreet,orevensettingupyourownprojectthatfitsaneedinyourcommunity.ComeandhaveachattotheVolunteeringandCommunityEngagementCoordinatorintheStudents’Unionandseehowyoucanbeagoodneighbour.

Inanurbanenvironment, foxesandothersmallmammalscanbeahugepest.Missedwastecollectionscan result in abuildupofuncollected rubbish thatwill encouragefoxestorummagethroughyourbinbags.Forthisreasonitisimportanttomakesureyouknowwhenthecouncilcollectsrubbishandrecyclingfromyourarea.
Binsneedtobeplacedonthestreetthenightbeforecollectiondayandmovedbackoffthepathoncetheyhavebeencollected.Pleasedon’tleaveyourbinsonthepavementanylongerthanthis,asitcanmeanpeoplewithbuggiesandpushchairsandwheelchairsuserswillhaveaccessdifficultiesonyourstreet.
Yourgardenisoftenthefirstthingthatpeoplewillsee,sotryandensureyoumakeagoodimpression.Keepittidy, freefromrubbishand, ifyouare luckyenoughtohavedecent-sizedgarden,whynotthinkaboutgrowingsomevegetables,orplantingsomenice flowers.Remember that keeping your house and garden clean and tidy all yearroundwillhelptoensurethatyougetyourdepositbackattheendoftheyear.
