PUBLIC servants were senthome early after the NT Gov-ernment’s phone, email, andinternet network failed in a‘‘significant outage’’.

The wide area network, pro-vided by Amcom, went downabout 11.23am yesterday.

All government depart-ments and Parliament Housewere knocked out until alllines were back at 4.28pm.

Some public servants werestood down and dismissedfor an early weekend.

Chief Minister’s Depart-ment chief executive GaryBarnes said ‘‘most govern-ment services across Darwincontinued to operate’’.

‘‘Individual departmentsoperated normally for most

of the day, with schools, hos-pitals, police fire and otheressential services continuingto deliver services,’’ MrBarnes said.

‘‘While most staff stayed atwork today, some agenciesmade individual decisionsabout staff who were most af-fected by the loss of services.’’

Information Services De-partment chief executiveKathleen Robinson said:‘‘While the outage mainly af-fected service provision inDarwin, there were some in-terruptions to services in theregion,’’ Ms Robinson said.

NT News has heard agen-cies in Katherine and Govewere also affected. Visitors toBerrimah Jail were unable tobook visits for today.

Customers were unable to

pay bills at Power and Water,the Motor Vehicle Registry,call Legal Aid or the Govern-ment Dentist, or contactdozens of other services.

Royal Darwin Hospital andNT police headquarters wereback online about an hour af-ter the upset. Calls to 000were unaffected.

Amcom chief technologyofficer Richard Whiting saidis was a major service failureand engineers were sent tofix it. ‘‘The incident is in ournetwork and we’re investig-ating,’’ he said. ‘‘The rootcause is to be determined.

Telstra’s networks wereunaffected. TIO’s ATM net-work was working, andbranches were open, but staffonly had limited access tocomputer systems.

Asim Razi and Ashleigh Ascoli received the Most Outstanding students awards last night

Education excellence rewardedTHE NT Board of Studies(NTBOS) awards recognised2013’s top students in a cere-mony at Parliament Houselast night.

Across 24 categories high-lighting primary and highschool achievements, 47 stud-ents were awarded for theirefforts by various membersof parliament.

They have been recognisedfor merits and other areaslike vocational educationand training, and the top 20

NTCET students. Educationminister Peter Chandler saidbefore the event studentscould now reflect on theirhard work in the months af-ter finishing their studies.

Ashleigh Ascoli and AsimRazi were awarded the MostOutstanding Stage 2 NTCETstudent awards.

Ms Ascoli, 18, fromO’Loughlin Christian Col-lege was the indigenous re-cipient, and said it was agood feeling to be recognised.

‘‘It’s really amazing, Year12 was a really stressful yearso I’m glad we’ve had time tolet it sink in,’’ she said.

Mr Razi, 17, attended Dar-win High School, and saidwhile the awards were hum-bling, getting into universitywas just as satisfying.

Both are studying at CDUfrom next month. Miss As-coli will study a Bachelor ofPsychology while Mr Raziwill study a Bachelor ofClinical Sciences.
