Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers
U15 Coventry Schools’ Football Finals - We were delighted to see our Year 10
football team pick up their second trophy of the season when they won the U15
Coventry Schools’ Telegraph Cup last Monday. The team, and their manager Mr
McLintock, travelled to Rugby Town FC to play against Cardinal Wiseman. After a
very exciting game, with Newman playing brilliantly as a team, I was a very proud Headteacher watching them collect
the trophy after they won convincingly with the final score 7 - 4. The match report can be found on page 2 of this
newsletter. A fantastic well done to the whole team and of course to their manager Mr McLintock.
Site Development - We are delighted to announce that over the next 15 months approximately £4.5 million will
be invested in our school site that will include a brand new purpose built canteen block. We have also successfully
bid for Diocesan LCVAP funding and been awarded £200,000 to complete the roof repair programme on all blocks as
well as replacing all the boilers. We are currently meeting with architects to agree the design of the new canteen
block and there will be a public consultation meeting on Thursday 11 July from 4-6pm in the Canon Diamond Theatre
(letter to follow) to provide further details. Parents and carers are invited to join us to find out more. As well as a
new canteen block, there is a significant refurbishment programme planned that will include an upgrade to: the Sixth
Form block, Library, ICT classrooms and Science classrooms. Obviously, this is wonderful news for our school
community and the new canteen block will significantly the improve service at break and lunch times for our students.
Big Sleep Out on Friday 5 July - A reminder that the Big Sleep Out is now taking place on Friday 5 July. I hope
students will join us to offer their support for those experiencing homelessness in Coventry and help us raise as
much money as possible for Coventry Homeless Charities.
50th Anniversary - As we approach the 50th Anniversary of the opening of our wonderful school, we are busy
planning for the celebration mass with Archbishop Bernard Longley on Friday 6 September. This will be a wonderful
way to celebrate the many successes of our school community over the last 50 years and we hope to hold mass
outside. We are also hoping that, weather permitting, we will be able to hold our end of term mass of thanksgiving
on the last day of term outside. A reminder to parents and carers that students will be dismissed at the earlier time
of approximately 12.45pm on the last day.
Year 6 Induction Evening, Monday 1 July 2019 - We are really looking forward to meeting all our Year 6
parents and their children at Induction Evening on Monday 1 July at 6.00pm. Following this we look forward to seeing
Year 6 children for their Transition Day on Wednesday 3 July. There will also be a Friendship Day on Thursday 4 July
for all the Year 6 children who are joining us in September from our non feeder primary schools.
Bronze DofE Students - Good luck to the 41 Bronze DofE students who are travelling to Cannock Chase for their
expedition over the weekend. Thankfully there is no rain promised!
Sophie Cotterill (9ACY) - Congratulations to Sophie who will be representing Warwickshire U14 at Gaelic
football in Sligo this weekend. We hope the team have a successful trip.
I hope you have a great week, best wishes, Marina Kelly, Headteacher

Weekly Prayer
Lord, we are conscious of the image that people give - whether it is the clothes we wear, how we look,
what we say, or who we choose to go with. Sometimes the image doesn’t match who we really are.
Lead each of us to live sincerely as we are called to be. Amen
Year 10 Coventry Telegraph Cup Football Final
Cardinal Newman vs Cardinal Wiseman U15
Year 10 Match Report
On Monday 24th June, the Year 10 football team competed in their last match of the season,
playing against Cardinal Wiseman in the Coventry Telegraph Cup final. The match was played on
a fantastic pitch at Rugby Town FC in very hot and humid conditions.
Newman began the game very quickly and found themselves creating many opportunities to score. Ten minutes into the match, after some
great play on the right wing from Emmanuel Igboekwu, Alex Davies latched on to a cross and tucked his chance away to make the score 1-0.
This set the tone for the rest of the half and further goals from Alex Davies (2) and two sublime long range efforts from Emmanuel and
Ciaran Whelan made the score 5-0. Wiseman were able to pull a goal back towards the end of the half after a dubious penalty decision.
Newman went into half-time 5-1 up.
The second half saw a dip in tempo from both sides, largely due to the heat. However, Newman still remained on top. After 5 minutes they
managed to seal the win with a great finish from Oisin Kavanagh. Wiseman did manage to get themselves a consolation strike shortly after
Newman’s sixth, when the Newman defence showed a very uncharacteristic lapse in concentration.
Just shy of the hour mark, Newman were then awarded a free-kick after a cynical foul from Wiseman’s left back, roughly twenty-five yards
from goal. Mikey Walsh, who was having a tremendous match as Newman’s captain, stepped up and struck the ball into the top corner with
a brilliant finish. A great goal to match a top performance.
Wiseman did not give up however, even with a convincing score of 7-2 with fifteen minutes to go. They managed to add two more goals to
their tally, bringing the score to 7-4 and adding slightly more pressure to the Newman side to get the job done. Newman however held their
nerves and continued to play great football through the midfield and managed to see the match out with a final score of 7-4.
This year, they have exceeded all expectations by winning both the West Midlands FA Cup and
Coventry Telegraph Cup. This is something that no other Newman side has managed to do and this
is due to their fierce dedication and ability to play fantastic
football. A thoroughly deserved achievement as they finish
the season unbeaten in all competitions and double winners
for the year.

Peace & Justice Group
Cardinal Newman Peace & Justice Group were
invited by Coventry and Warwick Universities
to attend the launch of the Monopoly style
game they have been working on looking at
homelessness. The students have provided
valuable feedback on the game which the two
universities and
Cyrenians have found very useful. Hopefully this
game will be a useful educational resource across
the city and beyond.
