The past few months have been very busy for the FRIENDS’ bookstores.
The “One Free Book” coupons from the Library’s Summer Reading Program
brought in many new customers, and over 1,000 books were given away.
The summer has also been the busiest time for donations, sparking half-off
sales at both stores.
Over 3,400 kids and adults participated in this year’s Summer Reading
Program, with hundreds coming to Rick Eugene’s Magic Show and the visit
from Serengeti Steve.
You can now help the FRIENDS when you shop on Amazon.com. Start your
order at smile.amazon.com and select FRIENDS of the Davenport Public
Library as your charity to support. Half of a percent of your sale will come
back to the FRIENDS.
If you shop at Schnuck’s, pick up a Community Card in the store and select
the FRIENDS as your partner. Up to 3 percent of your monthly purchases will
go to the FRIENDS.
The Fairmount bookstore will be closed November 27-29 for Thanksgiving
and December 15-January 1. Be sure to stop in for the pre-Christmas sale.
Welcome to new Special Collections Center Supervisor Jessica Marisol who
joined the Library in August. Jessica previously worked as the Librarian Ar-
chivist for Music Collections at the Old Dominion University in Virginia.
The Library is also welcoming Security Officer Joel Wilde, an employee of
PerMar Security who will be working at the Main Library. All three library
locations employ security guards/custodians.
We are happy to have several new Student Shelvers with us: Samantha Bral
and Daniel Johnson at the Eastern Branch, MerEdith Groharing, Zach Jansen,
and Rachel Garlock at the Fairmount Branch, and Zarah Hearn and Even
Henkel at the Main Library.
Happy Retirement to Pat Till who retired September 2 after 41 years at Dav-
enport Public Library.
Throughout October, November, and December, Library staff will participate
in Bomb Threat and Emergency Phone Use drills as well as mandatory har-
assment training. Employees will also undergo active shooter scenario train-
ing with Hank Jacobson from the Davenport Police Department. Emergency
staff training is year-round to keep staff and patrons of the library as safe as
possible.
Beginning in
November, Genesis will be
providing free help to citizens
interested in navigating the
Affordable Care Act. Genesis staff will be
available at the Fairmount Branch every
Monday between November 17 and
February 16, from 1:00-4:00pm. Assistance
is first come, first served. Sessions cannot be
reserved ahead of time.

Are you up for a challenge? QC area libraries are
teaming together again this year to see which city’s
teens can read the most between September 29 and
October 18. Here’s what you need to know:
It’s super simple. Pick up a reading log at any of
the Davenport public libraries. The rules are on
the back.
Teens who read 250 minutes get a small prize and an invitation to the
Teen Reading Challenge Party.
Teens can enter into additional prize drawings by reading more than 250
minutes.
Turn in your reading log as
close to October 18 as
possible so you can rack up
the highest number of points!
Davenport Public Library will be hosting this year’s Teen Reading Challenge
Party! Snag an invitation by reading 250 minutes or more, then join us
afterhours at the Fairmount Branch Library.
We’re opening the joint after dark just for you from 6:00-7:30pm, Friday,
October 24th.
Call or email Lexie the Librarian at (563) 888-3393 or
lreiling@davenportlibrary.com.
If you don’t know what to read next or haven’t seen a good book in a
while, we can totally help.
YALSA, an organization of librarians around the world who specialize in working with and for teens keeps a yearly list
of their favorite books. You can find the list for 2014 here: www.ala.org/yalsa/2014-best-fiction-young-adults. If
you would rather have your recommendations from librarians closer to home, check out the tons of reviews on the
Library’s Tumblr page: http://davenportlib.tumblr.com/tagged/dpl-teens.

Are the nuts in your family tree so
well hidden you suspect that squirrels
might be involved?
We in Special Collections understand, and we are once again opening our Center
to give you a little extra time to root out those difficult ancestors and graft them
on your tree.
For $10.00, you’ll have the run of the Special Collections Center on Sunday,
October 5 from 3-8pm. You’ll be able to use our resources, pick the brains of
your fellow genealogists, socialize with those who share your obsessions…and
what the heck, we’ll feed you, too!
Call us at (563) 326-7902 for more information, or drop off your registration fee
at the Special Collections Center at our Main Street location to secure your spot.
Congratulations to Amy Groskopf who was promoted to Assistant Director of Davenport Public Library. Amy’s vision
and contributions to the Richardson-Sloane Special Collections Center have made this facility arguably one of the fin-
est west of the Mississippi—a goal of Ted and Alice Richardson-Sloane.
Local history trading cards were introduced at the Bicentennial of the Battle of Credit Island on August 30. First in a
series, we hope the cards become popular with the younger set as they discover “Who Am I?” “Where Am I?” and
“What Happened” in Scott County, Iowa’s history.
New to the collection are the records of The Club of ‘89, a study club started in
1889 by Phebe Sudlow. As with all donations, the goal is to provide appropriate
preservation measures, archival storage and container lists / finding aids, so the
public can utilize records such as these. Local organizations are encouraged to
contact the Center to see if we might be of assistance with these unique and
important pieces of local history.
Special Collections also does public programs upon request. October finds us
hosting the Scott County Iowa Genealogical Society. November brings the Scott
County Historic Preservation Society to the Center. December 6 at the Daven-
port RiverCenter we will be presenting Beginning Genealogy Tips & Tricks as part
of Thru the Stones—Quad Cities, a convention spotlighting the Outlander book
series by Diana Gabaldon. Our programming covers topics such as genealogy,
family history, local parks, popular historical figures, and area neighborhoods, as
well as basic archival preservation measures you can take with your family’s
precious heirloom images and documents.
The Richardson-Sloane Special Collections Center is open for research
the same hours as the Main Library, and we encourage you to use our
resources to help you Imagine the Possibilities!
Phebe Sudlow was the first female
superintendent of a public school in the
United States.
