Chinedu OtuyaNgREN, Abuja, Nigeria

Presentation Guide

• What is SUNET• Relationship (Similarities and differences) with

NgREN• Academic Archiving of research publications and

student theses • Benefits• How to go about it

What is SUNET

• The Swedish University Computer Network (SUNET) is the National Research and Education Network in Sweden.

• Since the early 1980s SUNET

interconnects Swedish universities and academic institutes all over the country in a nation-wide high-speed computer network of10 Gbit/sec.

Relationship (Similarities and differences)

SUNET NgREN

Both SUNET & NgREN are star shaped networks with central routing in Stockholm and Abuja which are the respective capital cities

Stockholm Abuja

Relationship (Similarities and differences)

• Sunet has redundant connections and redundant equipment. NgREN uses an MPLS network also having high level of redundancy.

• Both uses fiber optics for network backbone

• SUNET began in 1980s and has a 10Gb/sec connectivity while NgREN in its phase one stage as at 2014 has a 155mbps last mile connectivity

• Fees from universities finance three-fourth of Sunet activities

and the remaining one-quarter is acquired from State through the national budget. World Bank approved a $10m funding envelope for the phase one of NgREN encompassing the 27 older Federal Universities

Relationship (Similarities and differences)

Academic Archiving Online

• DiVA portal is a finding tool for research publications and student theses

The research publications and student theses found in DiVA portal have been published and registered at the university or college of origin.

Benefits

Providing digital content to NgREN’s database

Benefits

Publishing system for research and student theses and a digital archive for long-term preservation of publications

Help students who wish to get ideas on a project topic written by other students in another University in Nigeria

How to go about it

• Autonomy of Universities in this project insinuates that they provide a link on their website to the central repository

• Duly approved research publications and theses are uploaded by the University of origin containing name of author, abstract, references etc.

• NgREN’s acquisition of a Google app (central repository) will allay fears of the Universities ownership of their intellectual properties

• NUC can intimate the Universities and general public of developments
