Introduction

•Forest planning and management require exact information from a detailed silvicultural analysis

•Calculation of forest structure parameters for silvicultural analysis is a huge work

•Complete studies of large forest areas are almost always impossible

The data for the analysis are almost always collected from sample plots

4

Aim of work and methods

•To create a tool for calculating parameters of forest structure for silvicultural analysis is the aim of this work

•The scientific basis is the generally used forest structure parameters and their calculation methods

•Calculation of forest structure parameters before and after extracting data from a data table will allow to simulate effects of silvicultural measures, of an exploitation or of a natural calamity

5

Introduction to F-Structure A&S: main window

•The main window has a menu bar and a toolbar

6

•The child windows are of table type

Introduction to F-Structure A&S: child windows

7

•The first column contains the name of the plot;

•The second column contains the tree species name;

•The third column contains the diameter of the tree;

•The fourth column contains the height of the tree;

•The other column can contain any information of the tree, normally the feature of the tree that allows user to extract data;

•If a row is used for comments, it must be marked with three stars in the first cell.

Introduction to F-Structure A&S: data input

8

•The input of the data must be done by typing in a child window

Introduction to F-Structure A&S: data input

9

• Before starting a calculation the data must be selected

•By choosing ‘Data analysis/Select data’ submenu a dialog box will be displayed where we can set the range of data to be involved in calculation

Introduction to F-Structure A&S: data select

10

•By pushing the ‘Quick selection’ button on the ‘Select data’ dialog box the

‘Quick select’

dialog box will be

displayed with

default range of

data for three tree

Compartments:

A, B and C

Introduction to F-Structure A&S: data select

11

•Choosing a tab and then click OK, the values from selected tab will be transferred to the ‘Select data’ dialog box

•After setting the range of all three compartments, we can click on ‘ABC’ button to choose to do calculation for all three compartments at once

Introduction to F-Structure A&S: data select

12

•To start calculation we choose the submenu ‘Data analysis/Execute’

•The calculation will be conducted according to our data selection

• If we have set the data range in the ‘Select data’ dialog box, the program will do calculation for the data selected

•If we have set the data range for all three compartments in the ‘Quick select’ dialog box and clicked on the ‘ABC’ button, the program will do calculation for all three compartments at once.

Introduction to F-Structure A&S: calculation

13

•The results of calculation for each compartment will be displayed in two child windows:

One child window contains the diversity indices

The other one contains all other calculated structure parameters of the forest

•If we have chosen all three compartments to be calculated at once there will be six windows with results displayed at the end of calculation.

•Logging, diseases, or storm… can have definite effect on the forest like destroying some species or some group of trees of a species

•Extracting data from a data set with following recalculating the parameters of forest structure will allow us to simulate the effect of above mentioned cases

•By choosing ‘Data analysis/Extract data’ submenu, the program will display the ‘Extract data’ dialog box for setting extracting options

Introduction to F-Structure A&S: simulation

22

Introduction to F-Structure A&S: simulation

•Setting options for extracting data: choose all trees of the species ‘Saraca dives’ with a diameter from 50 to 100 cm

23

Introduction to F-Structure A&S: simulation

•After options for extracting data have been set, clicking on the ‘OK’-button will cause the program display a dialog box where we can choose the way to hanle the extracted data:

Save extracted data to a file

Paste the data to a new window

Maintain only the extracted data

Delete the extracted data

24

Introduction to F-Structure A&S: simulation

•The dialog box for choosing the way to handle the extracted data

Conclusions:

-The data analysis can be very easy with using F-Structure A&S: by choosing to calculate for three tree compartments at once, after a mouse click we have two child windows of data for each tree compartment (one with diversity indices and the other with other forest structure parameters)

-Effect of silvisultural measures, of an exploitation or of a natural calamity can be simulated by comparing results of calculation of forest structure parameters before and after extracting trees from data table
